Default Simulcast cochannel fox hunt fun

The Columbia River has its own emergency dispatch center using a four site VHF analog simulcast from Astoria to Portland. We started getting complaints of garbled and unusable a couple weeks from the users, and first impressions were it's a synchronization problem. There is horrible grinding several places along the river that don't coincide with predicted overlap zones. Since everything is funded by grants, they elected to delay fixing it until the upcoming PM cycle in less than a month (mid May). Then they had a drill this week in the Portland area that failed the comm portion putting increased impetus to resolve the problem. But! Nothing is broken. All basic timing and level checks are good, and compare well to previous measurements. But, you head up river, key a portable, and all you get is zub zub zub.

... until you call in the phone and talk someone through how to disable the indivudual transmitters at the prime site to isolate the contributing sites. That's when you discover someone has put in rogue repeaters in multiple locations low to the ground with small footprints.

    (insert appropriate curse words here)

I have not identified specific addresses yet. I've only found general areas. I'll be heading out again this morning.

Ok VHF and rogue repeaters. Are these repeaters using same input as your VHF simulcast system? If so that is coincidental and quite a feat of planning!

One is a mistake. Two are deliberate. Three means something's up.
