    Default HMN1090D Mic with XTL5000

Got a new 1090D mic, I thought it was compatible with my XTL5000, but when I connect the MIC it just transmits until i unplug the mic.

    Anyone seen this?

Have you tried basic troubleshooting steps? Like trying the mic on another radio? Trying another mic with the radio?

    Mic could be bad?

    Moto says it is compatible.

They're absolutely compatible. You got a bad mic. Open it up and see what the board looks like inside. They're super simple construction.

Sounds like dirty or jammed up mic switch. Those potato mics are easy to repair. Good luck

Thanks all for confirming it is compatible.
So I pulled it apart, it was wired wrong. They had the black and green swapped
    All is good now...

WTF? On a new factory microphone? How hard can it be to connect the wires correctly?

Yep, I pulled it from the box, opened the pink wrap and pulled the bag of goodies off the cable...

FWIW, That's FOXTROTTED. It proves there was no quality control/test of that mic before it was sold to you, regardless of the QC sticker/stamp on the board or the box. Yes, it's just a mic -- but I see many issues with liability. What if you had plugged that mic into your XTL and it blew the switching circuit for key-loading (there's a transistor), and you had to flat-rate the XTL to Moto for repair? Moto may tell you the XTL is no longer serviceable and your only option would be to purchase an APX mobile.

I repaired an XTL many years ago that suffered a transistor failure (via GCAI) caused by a bad mic cable. The result was the inability to enter key-load mode until the transistor was replaced.

It makes me upset to hear of these poor quality control issues. If I was MSI and was reading the forum, I would personally reach out to you and offer you compensation for the product as well as the time you spent troubleshooting the issue.

OP could have killed two radios using my suggestion of simple troubleshooting techniques had conditions been such to cause that damage. Damn man, that's cold.

QC at Motorola has gone to sh!t in the last 5 years or so. I had zero out of the box failures with a new fleet purchase in 2013... in a 2018 fleet purchase I found FOUR. And that's not counting the brand new Impres2 batteries that have just been inexplicably refusing to take charges or calibrate. In talking to other people who manage large or medium size fleets I've found it's become commonplace, at least in this region.
