Default ARS - what is it and how does it work?

I honestly don't know much about P25 data, particularly on the trunking side, but I was wondering if anyone here understands Mot's Automatic Registration Server (ARS) and what it does, and can explain it to me. It seems like there are a lot of features that depend on having ARS working (e.g. OTAP, etc.) Thanks in advance for whatever you can explain.

In short, it allows radios to communicate with each other like 2 computers conected over the internet. That way they can send instant messages back and forth, programming information, etc. IF that doesnt answer your question I can go into a long technical version of the answer.
