    Default APX4000 Operation

I have a customer who is looking at the APX4000. I seem to recall that once it only supported Smartnet/SmartZone OR P25 Trunking. Can the radio do both modes now or is it still one or the other? They are on a SmartZone but need interoperability with the 7.13 in the region.

    Thanks!

I have one as a demo working on a 7.13 system. I can't directly answer that it will do BOTH 3600 and 9600 but I have a State Contract pricing sheet that shows the option line as QA02756 9600 OR 3600 Trunking. Kind of like the XTS 1500. I know the 6000 supports both.

The APX4000 is 3600 or 9600 only, not both. It also is only capable of a single encryption algorithm.

This makes sense, as the 4000 appears to be the replacement for the XTS1500. I'd like to know what your thoughts are on this radio, how is the RX audio, the battery life? It seems to share a similar form factor to the XPR7500 TRBO radio. I had one of those and I loved it. I have a 6000 right now but cannot get used to this "two sided radio" form factor and miss having an attached belt clip. I know, may seem trivial.

Get a XTS3000 with 9600 flash/firmware. So long as no AES, OTAR or 700 MHz, it'll work better (for their needs) than the APX4000. Lol

Are they at a similar price point? I'm not a fan of the single volume/channel selector on the portable. On the O2 mobile its ok but it doesn't work for me on a portable.

Whether it does P25 or Type II is dependent on the first trunk system - whatever type it is set to, all the rest must be set the same.

I'm not a fan of the MFK but being able to just swap between system types is better than people buying crappy XTS1500s and then being told "sorry you got to buy a flashkey to change it."

I did some moshing on the spreadsheet I have, if the 4000 (model 2) and the 6000 (model 2.5) are configured the same for 9600 trunking, they are only $35 or so apart. Here's a link to public record material if you'd like to check it out....

Note there is no encryption pricing. I have no idea on this as my agency doesn't encrypt. I can only look at the 6000 now due to the fact it will accomodate 3600 and 9600 systems and I use both. I have been very happy with the XTS 2500i as I have had very few failures in 4 years and they get beat on and wet often. May end up buying more of these (before they get canned) if the 6000 is a no go..

The 4k is a great radio. I have some running now, and have been very impressed with the voice quality and the ability to cancel background noise as well as the higher tier radios. It also works nicely with the XE RSM. The only gripe, is a different battery than the 6k and 7k.
