Default Johnson 5100 - black display

    I'm puzzled. I have a VHF 5100 with 4.14.something firmware.

This morning the radio seemed fine. This afternoon, it powers up with a black screen. When the radio powers up, all the pixels on the screen go black. If I power down the radio all the pixels turn off.

Pretty sure I didn't do anything monumentally stupid to the radio during the day. The battery seemed to have been really low, but other than that I can't remember anything out of the ordinary.

I can read and write to the radio with PC Configfure version 2.10. Tried writing the radio with the last good configuration, but no improvement. I've recharged the battery.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Try reflashing the firmware 4.14.05. The X platform occasionally loses its mind.

By chance is the 4.14.x firmware available someplace?

Did you bother looking in the firmware downloads area of the forum?

Yep , I completely missed that the firmware was there. And, I was there last week to find PCC software.

    Thanks.

I reflashed the radio with the 4.14.05 firmware. Display is still black.

I guess the next move is to take the radio apart and make sure the cables/connectors are clean and seated.

    Any other ideas?

Might it be the contrast setting got changed? With the ability to customize the menu items from PCC, it should be relatively straight forward to change it even without the ability to see the menu.

Trying contrast adjustment was a really good idea. It didn't work, but it was a really good idea.

I have also pulled the radio apart and cleaned and re-seated the ribbon cables.

No luck. I think my radio is now a non-display model, but with a keypad.

Could I swap a front panel in from a different band version of the radio? Different firmware version of the radio? Or would it throw a fit?

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

Have you just swapped the display board with another radio?

I only have the one radio, so no board swapping. Just wondering, in case I happened on the right deal.

The front panel contains all of the codeplug, tuning & option info - yes, you can change bands (and either reload your tune settings, or retune it) but it requires PCTune to do it. PCC alone won't work.
