Hi all,

I have a valid radio on the system, and asked for some talkgroups that I am not allowed to TX on. They said no problem, added the TG's I requested, and they added a new personality with an invalid ID so the system wouldn't grant me a TX request. My issue is that it seems it will not RX on those newly added TG's. I've read in the past that on P25 systems, the radio has to try to affiliate before it will RX anything. If it tries to affiliate and the system issues a deny, will that prohibit the radio from RX'ing on those TG's?

Thanks!!!

I think I answered my own question. I added a personality with only one TG, one which I am allowed to TX on. I set the scan list to the list which has the TG's which I could not previously RX on. When I hit scan, it worked. All the TG's RX'd, presumably because the radio affiliated using an ID which was valid on the system, but it doesn't affiliate using of the TG's in the scan list.

I may try to coax my radio guy to change my codeplug if there is a way to truly have an RX only mode with this radio.

On a separate note, I use both APX and XTS as well as MCC7500 consoles. This is the first time I've heard an XTS on a P25 system. The audio is WAY different than it is on the APX and at the desk. I only have a 4 Meg radio with Host Ver 9 and DSP Ver 16. Is this the best it will get? If I had an 8 Meg radio would it be any better, or is the Vocoder in the APX that much different?

An APX/XTS/XTL radio can do an Rx only trunking personality by setting the Transmit Mode field to "TG/AG Disabled" on the Trunking Personality screen. There are a couple of requirements for this configuration related to emergency operation, scan list operation, regrouping, etc. etc. The APX/XTS/XTL can perform this Rx Only function while properly affiliating with the system with a valid ID -- in fact, it is required.

For your particular situation, you would want a separate Trunking Personality for your Rx Only talk groups. However, operating this was would not allow you to Tx on your authorized TGs. An alternative would be to use a scan list configured such that Designated Voice Tx Member is set to "Selected Chan" under your regular trunking personality. Either method will, in effect, cause Rx Only operation on selected TGs.

I can't speak to the audio stuff. There is a thread here started by Mars with some good info on improving the audio settings.

Hope this is clear -- it's early, cold, and I need more coffee...

The TG/AG Disabled function appeared in the R19 XTS firmware release.
So that option is off the table for your 4 meg XTS.
Anything above R09 requires the 8 meg version.

Heh, figures. Thank's Motorola, for omitting a feature which has been a part of conventional radios since the beginning of time. That option should have been present in FW version 1.00.00. Oh well.
