Good evening,

One of my customers (small Volunteer ambulance corps) just purchased a new ambulance and requested quotes for VHF APX1500 mobiles.

Any feedback at all on these units?

They are still using VHF conventional but for whatever reason are pretty stuck on purchasing the APX series radios...

Considering the XTL line is no longer available, the APX line is fine. And the 1500 is a good start for a basic radio that will satisfy VHF conventional. It's compact and has the rugged O2 head. If they ever want P25, it's upgradeable to even Phase 2 if needed.

Spec sheet: http://www.motorolasolutions.com/en.../project-25-radios/mobile-radios/apx1500.html

For a good comparision, see page 11 of this PDF:

If all they need is VHF conventional support, I'd stick with the 1500.

The 1500 is a very nice radio only thing to remember is like the XTL 1500 it can never be remote mounted.

I've only seen one come through here so far. I remember the head is big and clunky. How crippled is the feature set? As bad as the XTL1500?

Well, Option G871 (XTL1500 Enhanced Software Capabilities) magically appeared and bumped the channel count up to 512... of course you had to pay for it.

I've often wondered if it was something along the lines of : A customer threatening to walk away from a 7-8 figure Purchase Order over finding out that you could only have 48 channels on the XTL1500.

https://www.motorolasolutions.com/content/dam/msi/docs/products/apx/APX_1500_NA_Datasheet.pdf - Page 2... looks like they learned their lesson this time

APX1500 is the logical Motorola model for non-command/mutual aid, non-special encryption, single band mobile. Sadly, I've been seeing a lot of people run when they here APX, when there are basic models just like with the XTL line. Maybe its because some of the entry level models with price points right on par with XTL were released after the high end. A misconception still seems to exist here and there that APX line can't be entry level.

Probably so. I haven't seen enough yet, and have not had the time to even look at the specs. I should probably just pull one off the shelve and take it apart over a weekend.
