APX Host Version starting with D

I have a friend who bought an APX7000 on ebay. When I looked at the Host version it is HOST Version D04.08.25 and DSP Version D04.08.25. The Secure,Tuning and Bootloader versions all start with R. On every other Motorola radio including APX that I have worked on, the the prefix letter is R, not D. I know the D is usually for development. The firmware version and DSP are very low, but I am afraid to lift them until I know if it is safe?

I did a search and the only other situations I saw was where the secure or bootloader version started with D, not the Host and DSP.

Anyone have any idea what this means.

Thanks!

Are you able to read the radio with APX CPS?

'D' is typically Development firmware. In the MotoTRBO side of the world, radios with 'D' firmware can sometimes be written with regular CPS but you can't upgrade the firmware to regular 'R' releases without using Depot. The most recent TRBO radios I've seen with 'D' firmware will no longer read/write with regular CPS, so I can only assume there is development CPS that is used with these.

Hopefully he isn't stuck with a dud!

Having Release Bootloader, Secure and Tune versions is a bonus, those are the things that typically cause problems. Does it read with normal APX CPS?

I have had the experience that if CPS can read / write the radio with "D" Firmware, you can firmware upgrade them to "R" Firmware with no issue. The issue you could run into is if the radio has a "D" Version Codeplug. If it does, the CPS will not read and write it.
