Good Evening all,

Just a simple question for those of you familiar with the W3 setup. Do you need the "Y" cable for the ASTRO Spectra Plus W3? I know you do with the plain jane ASTRO Spectra, but I know the W3s/O3s on the XTL5000s can plug straight into the drawer as well. I've seen pictures/auctions of AS+ with some that do have it and others that don't. Looking for solid info before I upgrade.

Thanks!

if you're just testing, you can get away with plugging the HHCH into one of the D-25 connectors and supply 12VDC into pin 12 of the other connector. You will have to look at the pin-out for the connector for the audio out lines (I think they are 24 and 25, but I could be wrong.) if you actually want to install the thing, you are gonna need the Y-cable.

That's what I was afraid of. And your second post sums it up nicely, hence why I'm asking here.

Didn't think I'd be lucky enough to find a W3 and a drawer and combine them together and get an easy upgrade. Thanks for the info!

Still not a bad deal. The y-cable is HKN6096B. There's one on Ebay right now for about $50.

The W3 control head CAN BE connected to the radio unit WITHOUT the Y-cable. I have done it several times. You only have to remove a jumper on the front panel interconnect board.

I have several 110W radios with W3 interconnect boards. You will just have to remove JU2 jumper and place it to JU3 on the board, an that's it! Now the W3 head can be connected directly to J5 connector and can be powered on with the top button of the control head.

Yes, that will provide power to the radio, but he's still going to need to get audio out somehow. On the Y-cable, both the audio and the switched B+ are present at the D-15 accessory connector - just like on the mid-power spectras.

He can get the audio from the other front panel D25 connector :) If the radio is going to be used as a base station. Like I use mine.
