The current issue with almost all tier 3 vendors is a limited range of models which support tier3 and is the top tier.

Very true. I know Simoco's new radios are about $150 less compared to their predecessors. The SDP660 is supposed to have a list prices of around $750 or less but currently there are less than 100 of the new 700 series of subscribers in the US that I am aware of. Tait is still up there (and one of the only alternatives to Motorola when it comes to intrinsically safe options).

Simoco new dmr radios are co developed with sepura and made by kirason in Taiwan from memory, I like Simoco radios but there development cycles are slow. the other intrinsically safe radio we see kicking a lot of butt at this point locally is Hytera new tetra unit which they are bringing across to dmr. I don't believe any other maker has meet the is certification they have got to yet. Tait has also released the is units now as well and they look sexy in blue!

DJ0WH: do you know whether or not this nonsense about "open standard mode" not been available in North America, is true?

We're in Canada & we recently submitted a CAP MAX system bid, and we were told by our CAM and SME that it was available.

I've been chatting with the VP who posted the CapMax decision reasoning on LinkedIn that was posted previously. Apparently he has been told he can have open standard mode for the system he has planned in Texas. Doesn't sound like he has started construction yet though.

Motorola are pretty careful about purging details of products they don't wish to offer from their planning documents; AES in the NA MOTOTRBO System Planner being an excellent example.

The Capacity Max NA planner goes into great detail about open standard mode, "advantage mode" (which appears more advantageous to Motorola's stock price than it is to the customer) etc, and the differences between those modes.
