Thought I'd share this with the group...
I've now tried all three various APX portable volume knobs (compatible with APX 6000, 7000, and 8000, but not XE radios)

There are three knobs (shown below left to right):

1) Low Profile (p/n 3675581B03)
2) Standard
3) RFID (p/n NNTN8646A)

There also two different torque rings (left to right below):

a) High torque (p/n 3275377H02)
b) Standard

On my 7000, the standard torque ring was allowing the radio's volume knob to be moved as I entered and exited the vehicle and the radio rubbed against the door pillar (both on my belt clip or on the shoulder strap holder (OEM /\/\ holder).
So I recently tried the low profile knob with torque adder. This made the radio's volume knob very difficult to use if you adjust volume a lot (just not enough grip).
Even with an RSM, I use the default settings for the RSM and don't specifically reroute all volume control to the RSM volume toggle...I find the RSM volume "steps" (in both XE or XP RSM) to be "slower" when adjusting volume (and the annoying beep for every step adjustment), so I still use the knob control for volume with overall RSM volume.

The high torque ring was the solution, but found that works best with the standard knob.

The RFID knob (which is especially handy for a fleet of radios and inventory control) added a nice height to the knob, but the tapered design and smoother grip grooves on the knob itself made it regress back in usability compared to the standard knob.

After trying all three, in my opinion, the best overall solution is the standard knob with the high torque ring.

Hope this info/review is helpful.

I don't think the RFID knob is offered as an option on XE radios. Would be interested if it was.

XE radios come with high-torque volume knobs standard. Once they're "broken in" they're very comfortable to use.

I haven't seen it offered for XE. Just standard non-XE.

Are you able to use standard torque rings on and XE radio?

I haven't tried. Not sure why you would want that. The larger diameter knob on the XE facilitates easier turning. It's also less "guarded" and more succeptible to accidental movement. Hence the need for the increased torque.
