I finally received an XPR5550 off eBay, which was listed as a "40 watt" model being sold by a ham.

I bought it since it was a great deal and verified everything worked out of the box. Today I finally got the chance to read the codeplug to learn I have a "low power" model instead of a "high power" model. Which is where my confusion began...

1) Is the low power model 30w or 35w on the high end? CPS is stating it as 35...

2) Is there an XPR model breakdown anywhere? I Googled the model number before buying it and got very limited info back so I just believed the listing, and

3) Is the difference between the high and low power actual hardware or a software limitation?

Either way - glad to have a "REAL" DMR radio in my hands... going to enjoy this a lot more than some of the junk I have handled on DMR.

The service manual (easy to find online) has a model breakdown chart that should answer all of your questions. It doesn't say anything about either a 30 or 35 watt radio. Looks like low power is 1-25W on both bands and high power 25-40W on UHF and 25-45W on VHF.

High power models have a low end RF output range that goes as low as around 25 watts. The low power radios will adjust down to around 1 watt. Make sure you are using the CPS in the 'Expert' mode to see all the settings.

There are 3 models of XPR in UHF - Low Split (403-470) at 1-25W and 25-40W, and high split (450-512) 1-40W. If you have a "QNN" in your model number, that would mean the low-power, 403-470 version.

The 403-470 48W models can also be lowered for 0.9W operation, via codeplug mods. Stable and clean.

And they don't get as hot as the high power versions.
