Entitlement ID Question for 25khz XPR radios

Reading the stories about how Motorola is canceling accounts in light of their new systems i get the feeling i wont be able to call them up and set up an account and buy the TRBO software, request EID, and then take the course to get my XPR radios (yes several) enabled for 25khz use.

Would it be in my best interest, or even possible for me to say, find a radio shop with an extra EID, work out a deal with them to buy it and then pay them for each of my radios to get me the entitlement for them to use 25khz.
Im not wanting to do anything that will get me or them in trouble. I want to get my radios to work on channels im licensed on that are 25khz.

Basically feeling out my options. Having worked at a 2-way shop about 10 years ago i know the community can be a bit tight knit when it comes to stuff like that.

Mods please delete this thread if you think its not appropriate.

Your thread is completely appropriate. You are asking a very valid question as to how MSI will service you, as their customer.

Any potential shop which supplies you (resells) an EID, is breaking their software licensing agreement. They cannot resell software, period. Even if they could sell you that software EID, how would you use it, considering you will no longer have access to TRBO CPS through MOL, because they're cancelling your account?

By no means am I trying to make you feel as if you've done something wrong, or suggest you're asking something wrong. It's MSI's fault. They've screwed this whole process right up.

We used to post the 20/25 KHz "patch" for each version of CPS here on this website. But when MSI lashed out at me in May like little fetal alcohol syndrome retards, we decided it was no longer a good idea to involve this site in anything related to MSI's intellectual property.

While I cannot supply you with a solution, I can absolutey encourage you to do whatever it takes to ensure you're able to use the MSI product you paid money for. If that means obtaining the software or EID through alternate channels, by all means you should do so -- assuming of course, MSI is refusing to service you.

Thank you for validating my concern with how MSI is handling new customers. 10-15 years ago when i worked at a Moto ASC I had to send them reports of the radio serial numbers and end user information, I always felt that was a bit extra for us to do that.
I can say that i believe i have found a solution to my problem, and this particular issue was just for my personal use, but going forward I will have to take a very hard second look at recommending Moto gear when officers ask me about equipment for off duty jobs.

On a side note i also wish i had been more active with this site over the years. I have been registered for quite a while but never felt i could contribute to it. This is a great site and i am glad to be part of it. I miss working for a 2-way shop.

Also, a quick note, the 25 kHz entitlement is for the CPS not for the radio. This means if you were to buy the entitlements on behalf of the dealer, then 1) you would need only one and 2) you would have to take your radio to that dealer every time you needed any channel changes made.

Just sayin'...

Thats one of the reasons im a bit disappointed in Motorola for making the radio like that. wide/narrow band should not be an option that requires special access to. But thats just my opinion.

Wasn't necessarily their choice. That was a federal ruling for narrowbanding. Apex gets around it by allowing the CPS to essentially figure out if the frequency is in a wideband service of so, will let you select wide band.

But why so lazy? It probably wouldn't take much to allow 25khz in ham bands or other areas that fall outside the mandate. Hell, I can log into my vertex account and download the CPS in either NB restricted or WB version.

Why Motorola plays these games with customers is a sad reflection that they think of the trbo customer base. A lot of the options to fix this issue are plausible and minimal effort to code into cps. Why are they wanting to take the mortal high ground when almost every maker gives the user of the cps to choose.... But then again they have also taken the high ground in aes for trbo.

There are other options out there and customers need to take a look and if they can try them, they will be surprised what other tier one vendors are making, quality of kit and no bs over 'features'

It's business use. Talking about a line that will not ever see non-narrowband use outside of special operations (like amateur radio service). So why not nip the issues that come up with people programming their own equipment and force everyone to use narrow in the US. At least there is the option to run wide. Icom locked all of their firmware on US models post-narrowbanding and you can only run narrow…there is no work around.

The wideband software for Vertex isn't built for the US. In fact, its actually for the EU and the reason Motorola doesn't offer a wideband software is because they sell different models outside of North America. Now when you start getting into some European companies, they just simply don't have US versions of software which lock you into narrowband operation.

So is Motorola being lazy? No. Commercially the only reason to run wideband on modern radios is for interoperability with existing wideband infrastructure such as amateur (which has it's own market of low quality equipment), GMRS (again, for the most part junky equipment), and marine. So if you need that as part of your feature set, chances are extremely high that you need P25 usability and not DMR…which is why that is supported in Apex CPS (along with the Astro 25 migration assistant and other features). When you let people program their own equipment, they will think back at what all they lost with narrow banding and program wide…that's the reason for the EID approach in that line.

Why don't you try setting up an account, taking the narrow-banding course, and ordering EIDs, and then letting us know how it works out? I would be nice to know the current climate with new MOL accounts.

I went though the process seven months ago with Motorola. Navigation was difficult and time consuming but the process was easy. Now I have 3 years of updates and downloads. Order several entitlement keys at once so when you change computers you have a key waiting.
