Sure looks like a XPR 5550. The label shows XPR 5550e. Wonder what the difference is? GARY

I suspect the addition of the bluetooth/wifi/gps daughter board to radio as default option and maybe engineering fixes due to changes with parts availability.

The "e" models do contain built-in wifi that allow connection to a wireless access point for codeplug and firmware updates.

Why not make it possible to use Wi-fi for everything while they're at it? Would be nice for places where there is bad coverage indoors. Just have the radio roam to Wi-fi.

Yeah, phones seem to do it OK. That would be a very neat idea! You might have to play some routing tricks to get it to direct to talkgroups properly, but it sounds doable.

I would buy this. Adding DAS or auxiliary repeaters to cover basement / tunnel levels in a campus scenario is just an expensive pain in the butt. We already have enterprise wifi in these locations so this option would be great.

wifi may be technically not that easy to 'transmit' dmr voice over, I sure there maybe issues with multicast traffic over wifi at ip layer and traffic prioritization, not saying it can not be done. One would also need a bridge somewhere to interface wifi traffic to DMR air side interface which knowing the vendors who cost your first born or two to license.

OTAR and firmware maybe a bonus if you have large fleets but how often do you upgrade firmware on radios when they are stable! OTAR couple be a bonus but it works just as well on the air side.

Alternative idea - we turn the radio into an access point and connect to the internet at 4800bps via DMR data!

The radio can't access as an access point, at least in the initial release. Acts as an infrastructure BSS client only.
