Just got a new APX 6000 at work. I cannot for the life of me get the backlight on the main LCD screen to go completely out. It is dim but not out. What am I missing?

Unless your radio/comms department has programmed a profile that turns the front LCD backlight off, there is no way for the user to turn it off. If you have a profile (PRFL) softkey on the radio, see if there is one that turns the front display backlight off, if not, you will have to talk to your radio/comms dept.

If your radio manager will not disable the light for you, take it up with your union as this is an officer safety issue. How are you to remain covert in a dark environment if your radio is lighting you up as a target?

HAHAA that is funny. Whats a Union, I dont think the south has heard of those yet. Will most likely just put tape over it and call it a day. Thanks for the replies.

Being a Law Enforcement Official in Florida and frequently change up which radio I grab for the day, the backlight on the APX6000 display should be covered up by almost every holster option provided for the device, as the back of the radio does not have a speaker on the rear. So it should not be an officer safety issue, with 143 APX6000 currently deployed I have yet to hear a complaint.

P.S. We have a union, and being a union member I would hear about it.

Regardless of holsters or tape availability, every radio I program for LE use has at least 1 channel that has no sounds or lights.
No sense in giving away your position/creating a target.

The help menu says it drains an extra 20 min off standard battery duty cycle. I always leave it off.

Sounds like the codeplug was built by a sales person maybe? Do you know if there was a second programming touch included in your contract?

If there is, create your own on the fly union and get as many cops/users to request the profile be added.

There is a lot of weight when a union or group properly presents an argument for a simple feature. Our system administrator was not going to allow our legacy UHF system be programmed into our apx7000/apx7500 for some strange reason. We wanted to be able to switch to the UHF channel (and have the dispatcher patch the UHF and the talk group together) when stepping into a known poor coverage building. After a simple letter from our Teamster business agent citing known in building coverage issues, the one single conventional personality was added to the codeplug.

I hope you get it changed.

Hah, if only it were only 20 minutes. In the real world it takes hours off the life of a standard capacity battery. I can't believe they still leave it enabled by default in CPS.

I hate making assumptions but it sounds like inexperienced techs may have written OP's template, or the fleetmap was developed with little or no input from the end users.

I have learned over the years. Only give them what they need to get there job done effectively. Less confusion the better, no one is allowed to have special programing done. Just like our patrol cars, everything is setup the same, only way you can tell them apart is either by a dent or the car number.
And don't mention the bells and whistles, the radio's are capable of.
