From what I read the first batch of these radios are the full commercial models with all features, if it takes off Hytera will write specific firmware for amateur. Let us know if you get full feature models or if they're already limited.

Just confirmed this. They are selling commercial radios at the ham radio prices to test the waters. Hytera USA does not have any ham radios yet to sell. Just a few prototypes to test. GARY

Just got them in, they are charging now. They have build dates of May and August of this year. They are all boxed and labeled just as their commercial counterparts:

PD782G U1 : A7.06.06.000
PD362UC : A1.04.14.002

I turned on the 782...and wow, this thing is solid. I am done with you Motorola.
The GPS affixed before I could even exit the menu, INSIDE my (former bank) concrete building. Its speaker is loud. Its buttons have a great snap to them.

Once I get them all charged up, I'll delve into programming.

Should I go order more? I mean it is Christmas time right?

When you are ready take a look at v8 firmware it will bring into play some good features who the others do not have yet.

Gps on these radios are fast not sure how they do it but they do own a patient or two on the antenna which has been designed for enhanced gps signal recovery.

No idea, but possibly is it a triple service receiver(GPS, GLONASS and Biedo(sp?)

Seriously looking at a P782... Price is right, if it is the LMR firmware...

My friend who works at Hytera says the 782 is the best radio Hytera makes. He actually prefers it to the new 982 construction wise. I have been using a Harris badged 782 for over a year now, & prefer it to my XPR7550. But I do prefer the display on the 7550 because of the bolder letters. Unfortunately, if you try to use a 782 on a DMR system that is using a Moto Trbo repeater that's a 450-520 split that's hex edited to work at 440, it will not work. Many do buy the hi split repeater on the used market because they sell for less. So make sure before buying any Hytera product that the Moto repeater you are trying to communicate with is a 403-470 split repeater.GARY

There is a much easier way to change band split in hytera, I will write it up and publish it(pending mods approval) but you only need text editor and winzip. I have a u2 radios operating on 435+ MHz with no real issue and if needed use the tunner to tweak radio

I like the pd782 but 982 is growing on me, it still needs some work in firmware but like most vendors these days no sdr radio is perfect on day 1

No issues, so long as you don't think HYT would object. If it's a simple edit of a non-encrypted file, no big deal.

Motorola on the other hand, would launch a lawsuit if someone even posted a picture of a radio operating out of bad.

I don't believe they will object - the file are not password'ed or encrypted as at V8 cps release. There is also prior art on google is you search too.
This is the way I have been altering the band limits on a number of hytera models over the years.

I will warn you - milage very but the transceivers will move up to 15mhz outside of factory specs. you need to test your radio if you do mod it.

To make the changes you first need to know what version of code/FW is installed on radio, once this is know go to config directory which is a directory in x:\program files (x86)\Hytera\Customer Programming Software\. Once in the directory you will see a series of zip files which start with r followed by two digits, the digits represent the major firmware versions.

Unpack zip file into to another location and then locate Model.dat in the main directory.
Open Model.dat with your fav text editor.

Once open you will see if references a number of models/sub modems etc at the top end of the file, about 1/2 down you when see frequency upper and lower limits etc . Easiest way to make change using search and replace. If you want your 400-470 to stretch to 485, do a search and replace for 470 and change to 485. freq ranges etc. The file is structured text file - no xml love here!

Once you have made the changes, save file and then create a new zip package. rename old package and then move new package in with same name.

Restart CPS, read radio and then take a look at radio information screen to confirm new upper or lower limits are correct.

If you go out of phase lock the radio will beep at you, you will need to work out where the tx start is by programming in a couple of channels and testing tx.

You can use tunner software to tweak radio but this is something which needs to be done with test kit. I have heard it done by other techs

Now you can usually move the zip packages between cps versions with no issue. if your radio has been programmed with a updated zip file and you read it with a factory CPS it will error out on you and not read the radio.

If I have missed a step please contact me and let me know the issue, I will update the how to doco ( I have had 2 very nice cyders tonight while writing this up :))

techman, does this method still work with newer firmware? I read on one of the Hytera groups that with a recent FW update (7.something) this method quit working.

On the PD782, encryption is available and can be enabled, as well as man down.

I was able to load the latest of version 8 last night, without any issues. It works smoothly and I really like the Night mode that is now a dark blue color theme.

The only issue I see after this is I can no longer choose wideband on the analog channels (honestly not really an issue for me).

Will any microUSB to USB cable work for programming or do you need the branded PC-38 cable?

They are advertising PA782G-U1 Amateur but selling PD782G-U1? At $449.95? PD782G-U1 list is $419 and is full featured. How are they handling the CPS? Free to the dealer so are they selling, included, link to a pirate site, etc...? I didn't see it on their web site.

Also wondering if the Dealer agreement allows Internet advertising? Amateur sure but they are advertising the PA (ham) version but really selling and delivering the commercial PD one.

Not trying to beat this up but hope it's not a trend as my company has a fairly large base of Hytera users that I don't want to lose going to mail order.

Correction: I was looking at the the PC-69 for the small PA362UC. That cable looks like an ordinary microUSB to USB cable. Any thoughts on that relatively inexpensive low power pocket radio?

My friend at Hytera tells me they are still ironing out the details on the Ham radio deal. In the meantime, GigaParts is selling commercial radios at the ham radio prices to "test the waters". That's all I know, so I won't speculate on anything else. Sorry. GARY

The CPS is free to download from the GigaParts site (along wit the drivers). I just downloaded it.

The small antenna really hinders performance. Tried one once, & couldn't get into a repeater that was 10 miles away, & a XPR6550 had no problem. If it's to be used in a hotel, or expo hall with an in building repeater, it would be OK. GARY

You need a cable and USB to serial converter. I have had success with a cheap cp2102 uart from eBay soldered to a micro USB pigtail.

(For a pd362)

techman, does this method still work with newer firmware? I read on one of the Hytera groups that with a recent FW update (7.something) this method quit working.

It is dependant on if the radio will go out of band and maintain pll lock for example. I have both mobile and portable radios which are high band uhf both working down as low as 435mhz. I have also see other u1 radios struggling to go to 480mhz

As I said mileage very's depending on radio and version of radio. I have use this mod mod since v4 of code and no issues on the original pd782 radio I purchased 5 years ago. I have helped locals here move new md652 down as far as 434 MHz using 7.0 and 7.6 code which was factory installed.

You need the correct programming cables other wise no go.

Hytera lower end radios use USB to serial uart (prolific from memory) and 600 series and higher is a USB ip emulator. You can make cables for most radios if you have the time. At this point hytera is not doing any one wire prom bs to make your life hard.
