XTL5000 Midpower. Is the Ignition Sense (red) wire on the rear accessory cable hookup (trapezoidal plug) required to power up the radio if already a dedicated power source (though the normal power cable) is attached? I know I need it for the speaker hookup, but was wondering if I can get away without the ignition sense hooked up.

The J2 is needed for the emergency jumper afaik but no the IgS is not required as long as you do not have it programmed as required in CPS.

tsunami is correct the ign sense can be enabled/disabled by the CPS. I recommend that you keep it disabled unless your using the unit in an emergency vehicle where the unit may be accidentally left on for hours/days unattended and result in a dead battery.

In the house I don't use the ign sense wire, because the radio is on all the time. But in the car I do use the wire for the convenience of the radio going on/off with the ign key. GARY

Just out of curiosity why do you suggest disabling the feature? I generally set it to soft on/off to give the radio owner the choice when they have it wired in. Just curious if there is a particular reason.

On my APX mobile, it's not wired up (from the O2 head). I turn on/off the radio whenever I want. I also have a 2 hour timeout timer on the radio (just in case I forget to turn it off). The reason I ask about the XTL5000 (I haven't had XTL's before) is that with my MTVA, the Ignition Sense (yellow wire) is required in order for the system to work properly. Sounds like the XTL will act like the APX and the IgS is not required.

Personal preference.

Soft off is the default for the XTL and the APX. Required would be used in an application such as an accessory battery timer or with a base station and UPS/remote to insure that the unit powers back on after a total power failure if that is desired (unattended restart).

The IGN sense is required on my XTL5000 but it is a 05 Remote Head. I don't believe it is required when it is set up as a dash mount.

Also recommended as a safety feature in emergency vehicles, to prevent the operator from turning the radio off and missing calls (our APXes are set up this way.)

Just FYI, if using in a Trunked mobile with Charge Guard or switched power. You should hook Main radio power to continuous power, and ignition sense wire to timer or switched power. This is so the radio can deregister from the trunked system correctly. Also if you have encryption with infinite key retention NOT set.

This is how we setup our units, we had a few units with soft power programmed but to many trouble tickets complaining radio wont turn on,,,,,, we changed that programming pretty quick to ign only.
