IMPRES Battery message in XPR7550

The XPR7550 came with a 2150mAh IMPRES battery. When powering up the radio, a message is displayed telling me that there is an IMPRES battery.

I just got two brand-new 2250mAh batteries, both with labels identifying them as Motorola IMPRES batteries, but neither displays the message on power up. The battery level "gauge" is on the screen with all three batteries.

My charger is an IMPRES WPLN4243A, Ver 3.90.

Is the message supposed to always come up?

I have two 2150mAh batteries, same date code. One produces the powerup message, the other doesn't. I hadn't noticed this before until you mentioned it.

As long as both batteries show valid info under Main Menu -> Utilities -> Battery Info, there's nothing to worry about.

One is currently in the charger, but the one I checked comes up with a "Recondition battery" message.

I thought the IMPRES charger automatically does that in the first (overnight) charge.

Looks like the problem was with the initial charge. The battery that was charging yesterday now DOES give the IMPRESS message. The other is now charging, and I'll give it plenty of time.

It would be easier, though, if there were more than one light on the charger. My colorblindness makes it almost impossible to tell what color the indicator is. I'll just leave it there for a day or so, in order to be sure it's done.

I hear ya on that one sir... it can be frustrating at times.

To be sure it's reconditioning, sometimes I'll leave the radio on with the volume turned all the way down for a couple of hours, then pop it into the charger. If the indicator light turns red, I do the old trick where I remove the battery and re-insert it within a couple of seconds. Then it turns "not red", and I know it's reconditioning.

From time-to-time I cruise EBay looking for the LCD display inserts for the WPLN4121 gang charger, but I haven't run across a good deal yet!

Is there an Impres charger which A), accepts Saber batteries, and B), has an adapter to take the XPR7550 batteries?

I see 4127 chargers with display, that I'm told will handle Sabers, but can't find an XPR adapter to fit it.

I have a single-unit WPLN4114AR which was one of the original "IMPRES" chargers. No display, unfortunately (you can add one "unofficially"). That was designed for XTS3000/5000 and Astro Saber/Saber/Systems Saber batteries, and I use an adapter to do the APX type batteries. I believe there is an adapter to do XPR7550/APX4000 batteries, but I don't know the exact part number as I am using a regular XPR7550 charger to do them for the time being, and using the old IMPRES SUC just to do APX batteries at the moment.

I do believe the NNTN8169 is what you need to adapt that charger to the XPR series (and APX4000 as well). It's been mentioned here on the board some time ago.

There is an adapter to put in the original Impres charger but Moto doesn't sell it. However it comes with the NNTN7392A Impres data reader which looks exactly like the charger. A few other adapters also come with the 7392A. Rick Thompson sells them on that auction site for $30-$35. I have used it many times to charge my XPR7550/6550/3500 batteries. GARY

Not true. NNTN8169A is for the SUC. NNTN8170A is a 6 pack for the MUC.

The adapter I use to charge my XPR6550, & 7550 batteries in my Impres charger has battery contacts on it. The adapter 8169A has no contacts, & makes no mention of Trbo batteries in the description. The adapter that comes in the analyzer kit for the XPR6550, & 7550, that I use is not sold, & has battery contacts. GARY

+1 on the MUC. I have a six way charger to handle Impres XTS and Impres Saber batteries. It's fitted with a MUC 'cup' in one bay to handle XPR gen II batteries. Works a treat when you need an Impres display for a battery.

Here's a photo. Totally different from the NNTN8169A.

That's great. The APX4000 and XPR7550 use the same battery mold. Motorola makes an adapter, and they sell it, is the chief point here.

I have that adapter for the WPLN4114 SUC. I have to say, it's horribly engineered. Not only does it require TWO screwdrivers to remove from the SUC, the fit on the radio in the adapter is very loose and seems flimsy.
You can get an perfectly working condition used impres SUC for XPR and APX1000/2000/3000/4000 radios for less than the XTS/Jedi SUC charger adapter. p/n WPLN4243A

Yes, it is a pain to remove, but I was able to pick up a brand new WPLN4243A for $20 a few months ago, which is cheaper than the adapter. I can only assume Moto makes 2 designs. The one I use with the contacts where I posted a photo, & the other type w/o the contacts which I have never tried. GARY
