I'm guessing the 4x80 / 6x80 stuff isn't killed because their 5x80 / 7x80 successors don't appear to support SMARTNet (at least from a look at the 02/05/2015 Professional Series Price Pages) ?

You guess correct. Also, there isn't a replacement in 800MHz for the CSA Class 1, Div 1, Group A/B intrinsically safe rating of the 6x80 I.S. portable.

I've got a fleet of 6550s in a rural public safety setting. Any suggestions for an alternative to the 6550? The 7550 is not good because having channel knob stops is important.

Channel knob stops are definitely important in a PS environment. An alternative to the physical stop, is the new Text to Speech feature. The radio will announce the channel name when a channel change is made.

Not as useful as a physical stop (user can count clicks, or go to 1/16 to get dispatch) but it's better than nothing.

The 3500 has channel stops. Smaller than 7550, but the same battery. 128 ch max, but how many ch do you need? GARY

Thanks Gary - We've played around with the 3550s and they just don't have the audio that the 6550 does (volume). Voice announce is like having your dome light on during a night time traffic stop so that won't work either. 128 channels is more than enough but channel stops are a must. Ugh, this is bad.

Your officers don't use private audio accessories? (ear pieces). They're essential kit for officer safety. But I do understand your point.

Your right Mars, that could be an option; most of us have earpieces now. There's just no replacement for channel stops I guess. For 18 years that's the first thing I do when I get out of the car is land that knob on channel 1. I even find myself doing it unconsciously while on a call. I can also land 4 channels in milliseconds if I need to: 1=primary, 2=talkaround, 15=TAC and 16=Vehicle Repeater.
