IPSC in the amateur environment

Guys,

I just wanted basic clarification about whether or not to enable IPSC functionality on the channels I have programmed into my 7550 for use on the DMR-MARC network.

I don't roam with the radio, so I'm not sure if I'm going to loose anything if I disable it.

Thanks in advance...

No, you do not need IPSC enabled unless you intend on using these features:

- Roaming (allows you to choose a roaming list)
- Per-site RSSI roaming value
- Messaging Delay timer value (This allows for extra network latency, to avoid missed transmissions between sites)

DO upgrade your firmware to R02.50.05 or R01.12.17, and DO enable Digital AGC and at the least, the BASIC noise suppressor. Disable "AF Suppressor" and "Trill Enhancement".

Disregard what DMR-MARC states about audio settings as the information is outdated and they're clueless.

Radio was R02.50.05 on arrival, and the AGC & noise suppressor were already set like you stated. AF & trill also disabled already.

What are your opinions about the 'TX Interruptible Frequencies' and 'Allow Interruption' settings? I've heard numerous opinions about each (both for & against). Also, the 'Enhanced Channel Access' feature...

On DMR MARC, disable all of those options. On real systems, they are extremely beneficial.

Thanks a million for the quick responses - I'm assuming what I have set in the picture below is acceptable for amateur use. I'm not on any commercial systems besides the stand-alone repeaters at one of my distribution centers.

All of the settings look just fine for the ham network. No offence to hams: I'm a ham too. But I use the shower and exercise. And change my underwear often.

One last question - I passively monitor the medics that cover the east end of my county, and most of the county that's east of us. They are on a multi-site IPSC conventional setup (confirmed non-trunk). I have the radio set as 'RX Only' on those channels.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty much forced to have a single-contact RX group list to make the radio unmute on their talkgroup, right?

Yep. Hopefully they're using a "non-standard" talkgroup so you can alpha alias it properly. Too many people tend to use 1, 100, 1000, etc. Once you name a group call, it uses the same name if you use it elsewhere.

I kind of went off topic, but you will come to understand these limitations after using the radio for a few months :)

You mentioned enhanced channel access earlier, and that is one thing I had everyone on our repeater do. We were doubling over each other like crazy at first when we had a bunch of guys talking. Enhanced Channel Access fixed that very quickly.

I agree with you, but unfortunately the cheap Chinese garbage does not support this feature, as it is proprietary to Motorola. This is why it is not used on the ham DMR system; unfortunately hams seem to think purchasing the cheap Chinese garbage radios is acceptable.

All the commercial DMR operations around here seem to faithfully use 8-digit TGID's. That system has the bigger EMS agency on TS1 on their own TG, and the 2 smaller EMS agencies on TS2 with their own separate TG's. Not quite sure why they did that, but the TS2 agencies don't seem to cause each other any drama.

Probably because someone READ and followed the guidance in the SYSTEM PLANNER before setting up the systems you are monitoring.:)
