Is there anything special about a CP200D programming cable?

From the photos I've seen online, the CP200D cables look exactly like a mini- or micro-USB cable that come with a cell phone. I've got dozens of those cables - has anyone successfully used a non-purpose-built USB cable to read these radios?

Well you might have to shave the rubber off the connector to make it fit

I found some cables I bought from Monoprice awhile back wouldn't fit the CP200D without a shave
