Good morning everyone,

I am trying to enable GPS on our MotoTrbo radios, and I am confuse about ARS. It seems to me ARS needs to be activated for the GPS to work. However ARS is generating a lot of traffic on our radios. The radio transmit continuously. Actually our setup is one XPR8300 repeater in conventionnal in digital mixed mode and XPR6550 portables (20).

To that I use one of the portable to run a dispatch application, to monitor GPS and presence. (It works for GPS but is not reliable at the moment) Presence don't work.

I am wandering if I am missing a piece of equipment for presence (ARS).

What are your feelings about my setup ?

Well, for Automatic Registration Service (ARS) you need an ARS server of some form to respond to ARS requests from the radio and track the radios "presence" on the system and slot, depending on what you enabled in the actual radio code plug and what firmware release you have. At one time I believe someone here had an "open Source" ARS server, but that would technically violate Motorola's licensing I think and it has been pulled down. If you want to buy the Wireline EID from Motorola then you can use their DDMS software, yes they charge per repeater but the Windows software is free through your MOL account..

But, I am not sure why you need ARS if all you are attempting to do is send GPS data through a "control Station" to a server for processing., an I have not looked at the GPS data stream so I am not sure if you can just "send it". But seem to imply you can and are doing so already.

There are a number of quality products on the market including ours that can do most of this for you. PM me if you are interested.

Hi There,

Older TransTRBO "Freeware to Hams" versions have an ARS server built in.

Try looking at http://cimconcepts.updates.net.au for the downloads.

The Freeware ARS server that I made available was not a Motorola approved application and has been removed.

Support for Transit TRBO and TransTRBO is available in the support forums at http://www.transtrbo.com.

You'll need to contact me to receive your registration key.

BTW: An ARS server is just about mandatory if you have GPS enabled on your radio network - as it also requires ARS to be enabled. Each radio sends an ARS Request to the ARS server and if there is no response from the server then the Radio repeats the request quite frequently - hence the chewing up of the bandwidth.

cheers

That's exactly what happens to my setup they get no ARS answers and transmit quite often. I only have a couple radio with GPS activated tought. Is the Wireline EID, necessary for transtrbo or only for ddms?

I am looking for the EID part number, but can't find it. Anyone have it for a XPR8300

Correct me if I am wrong, with newer version of TransTRBO you need DDMS, but older as a server integrated. With DDMS activated on the repeater, instead of pointing ARS to the control station, I would point on the repeater ?

I can't speak for the TransTRBO guys, but our DAPage solution has the ARS built into the Control Station version or uses the MNIS/DDMS or even the XRC/XRT when provided.

Also, DDMS is not activated on the repeaters, with the EID installed on the repeaters then you can build the middleware Windows based server that is required for DDMS and MNIS an then you hang your application(s) on or behind that.

Also, the TMS & ARS ids in the user radios always point to the Control Stations or Windows MNIS/DDMS server never the actual repeaters.

Lastly, check the sticky post above in this forum for an EID reference. It may be there.

MOTOTRBO Network Interface Service (MNIS)
MOTOTRBO Device Discovery and Mobility Service (DDMS)

I'm assuming you're looking for Enhanced GPS for the repeater? I believe it's option HKVN4048A. But it may also be HKVN4055A. The documentation is not very descriptive. Both are GPS options for the repeater.

Here are the supported options (as of 2.4) for the 8300 vs. 8400.

XPR8300:

Digital - Free
IP Site Connect - Free
Capacity Plus - Optional
Enhanced Privacy - Free
Transmit Interrupt - Free
Dynamic Mixed Mode - Optional
Enhanced GPS - Optional
Digital Phone Patch - Optional
Restricted Access to System - Optional

XPR8400:

Digital - Free
IP Site Connect - Free
Capacity Plus - Optional
Enhanced Privacy - Free
Transmit Interrupt - Free
Dynamic Mixed Mode - Optional
Enhanced GPS - Optional
Digital Phone Patch - Optional
Capacity Plus (Linked) - Optional
Restricted Access to System - Optional
Network Application Interface Voice - Optional
Network Application Interface Data - Optional
Digital Voting - Optional
Satellite Receiver - Free

I believe this is what you need for MNIS/DDMS and it looks like it may not be available on the 8300..

Enhanced GPS is another whole can of worms.

Yep. For further info, the radio will attempt to register 5 times within 15 seconds of power up. Then it will wait one minute, and try 5 more times. This happens every minute for 5 minutes, then the radio waits 5 more minutes, and starts the cycle all over again. It doesn't take too many radios doing this to start interfering with your voice comms regularly.
