Mobiles hooked up as a repeater

Can two XTL or APX series mobiles be connected using COR and PTT lines to function as a repeater ?
Are there any pitfalls with this setup ? I know Motorola has a PTR (not available for public, only for 3 letter agencies) and it required a software option on the radios (not sure if it was only for the RX radio).

Sure they can. Would not recommend it for digital voice as you would be double vocoding.. but for analogue it would work. Would be cheaper to use a couple of Kenwood TK-X60 or X80, motorola CDM mobiles for temporary portable repeater.

A couple of CDM750's would be the ideal choice rather than tying down two high dollar radios for use as a portable repeater.

Sorry, I should have included this , the reason for using XTL or APX was due to the fact that it is P25 conventional system and may require encryption

It's not very secure to have the repeater keyloaded as they're not normally at manned sites. While back-to-back P25 mobiles work, the double vocoding doesn't sound the greatest. Ironically two analog mobiles back-to-back work better in terms of audio but perhaps not as well in terms of range but at least there is no security risk.

Thanks for the responses, looks to me, that a cleaner solution maybe just to drop a quantar running at a lower power.
