Motorola 800 antenna question

I got some 800 antenna's in a junk box a year or so back and I have questions. I'm going to give a friend of mine some of them and the system is mostly 800 ,but has a few 764-774 frequencies that his radio is on. On the short(stubby) 800 Motorola antennas how do you make sure they are for 800 and not a 900 antenna, they are not marked ? Is their a lot of differences in the ones marked 700/800 and just marked 800 ? Will the 800 antennas work on 764-774 ok ? Will the stubby work on 764-774 ? These are the JEDI/XTS antennas.


I'm mostly a VHF,UHF,low band user so I don't know much about the 700/800 stuff so be easy on me :)

Supposedly the stubby antenna only comes in one flavor. Motorola markets it as being 7/8/900 wide band. It should have a white insulator on the connector.

The stubby does have the white insulator .

Motorola makes a 700/800 stubby. I have one, and it's marked 700/800 on the antenna. The part number is NAF5084A and the insulator is white (just looked at it).

The also make an 800/900 stubby, which is part number 8505241U06. It's often referred to as a 700/800/900 antenna, but Motorola says that it's 806-870 MHz. It's marked 800 on the antenna. Gave mine away to a friend and bought the 700/800 version.

Astro Spectra, if you are the author, could you re-publish it here? The link provided requires a batboard account to view and for those that don't have an account there it would be nice if you can put it up here as well, especially if you plan on updating it.

​I originally compiled this list from antennas found in the workshop and posted it on the Batboard back in June 2009. Updated later from Moto docs and most recently this thread.

You need both the base colour and length to properly identify Motorola antennas.

Astro / XTS / and others using the Jedi SMA type:

Thanks! Now, for completeness, if you can add in the part numbers, that would be the cat's ass! :D

Also, the VISAR stubby bottle-shaped VHF's need to be added... They use the same color codes as the regular VHF heliflex's, but obviously the lengths are less. The part numbers are in the Jedi manuals, IIRC. I actually need to find/order a couple of them so this is topical!

By the way... I did cut and paste.. NEVER claimed that It was my work. Where in that thread did I say This is a list that I put together? I though these boards were about helping other hobbists and sharing information.

There would be no difference in the antenna being it is a high MHZ band antenna the difference would just be you don't have a long antenna just a shorter one wouldn't make a difference in quality though.

Are you saying there's no difference in performance between the 800/900 MHz stubby and the longer 1/2 wave antennas?

I think I see what he is trying to say, the difference between a stubby VHF and a longer one is much greater than the difference between a stubby 800 and 1/2 wave 800. No doubt the longer ones work better no matter what, just that there doesn't seem to be as much of a difference.

That said, there IS a big difference in quality of signal radiated. They both do an adequate job of loading the transmitter with a 50 ohm load, but a good match does NOT equal efficient radiation, as evidenced by a DUMMY LOAD. Dummy loads match great, but DO NOT RADIATE AT ALL. Likewise with a stubby, it will load the transmitter properly and get a good match but won't radiate as much signal as a longer antenna.
