Motorola ADP question

Hey guys, I was a bit curious about ADP as far as it was being programmed through CPS. I have a few keys still in the hardware, frankly I dont even know what the code is to the keys. I just like having them in there, theres just something about seeing the Ø and AES . Anyway back to the original question. I wanted to turn on the ADP function in my CPS, from what I understand, once I start using software defined encryption, I cannot use a KVL to fill the keys correct? also, if I did turn on software encryption, and switch it back to hardware, will my original keys be erased?

If you enable software encryption then as you surmised the hardware encryption is disabled. This does not erase the hardware keys. You can return to the hardware encryption any time. If you have a KVL and modules capable of ADP then you can mix and match hardware equiped radios and software equiped radios providing they use the same key. In otherwords any ADP enabled radio can talt to any other ADP equiped radio providing they are using the same key and KID.

There is no way to read the existing keys from the hardware module, if you dont know what they are then you are stuck. the only way to safeguard them is to enable infinite key retention in the radio wide options.

Thanks Notarola for clearing that up, I wasnt too sure if the keys on the hardware would Z out if I switched to software defined and back. As far as ADP is concerned, you mentioned that the KID has to match too? could you elaborate a bit more about that? I just assumed as long as the key data match I would be able to communicate.

Im not worried about trying to read the existing keys from hardware, I just like having them there, I do have them set for infinite key retention. Eventually when I win the lottery, Ill purchase a KVL to fill it with crypto keys.

The only thing blows about having a digital radio is no one uses them around here, I only know of one other guy on the P25 repeater in my area. When I go to ham meetings, everyone gives me the weird eye when I bring my XTS in there, they look at me as if the radio was stolen or I am an alien.

There is not much to elaborate on, like Notorola said, you have to have the KEY and the KID matching to work. Same as the other encryption protocols, AFAIK, with the possible exception of the older ASN (non CKR) algorithms, where the KID was a function of what slot it's in - I believe there you can put any key in any slot and as long as you select the right key, whether it's the first or the 5th one, it will work.

If you use the "Key ID" function to switch keys on the fly, then the old-school ASN keys need to be in their correct slot positions too, since it functions something like "use the key in the 5th key slot" essentially, and whatever is in that slot has to match to work.

Ah ok, makes sense, Thanks Alpha for clearing that up.

reminds me of when my new guy put one of our crypto keys in the wrong slot with our harris radios when I gave him the ANCD to fill it with, we didnt find out until later on it was something that simple. I wasnt too sure if professional radios worked the same way as AN PRC radios as far as crypto was concerned.

I cant thank you guys enough for having a website like this thanks to admins and mods that are on top of their game!

Yes I have to admit this group has got me out of trouble a few times and taught me many things in the 6-12 months that I've been part of it. I would actually hold this group on par or higher than Batlabs which is the other good group for when "$hit happens".

EDIT: take out the stars and give the resembled word rather than the actual word... flamming language filters lol.

When it became almost impossible to get anyone to update the Batlabs website some of us just sat back and waited.

When the flame wars and domain control war started on the Batlabs forums, some us just quit posting there very much.

Here is where we rest. Now RR is like the Sunday funny paper. Interesting reading, but you can't take it too seriously. Which is why this place exists.
