Hello Everyone,

Is it possible to use portable radios as control stations for voice and data instead of mobile radios?

Thanks,

The short answer is - YES -

But, you need to understand the length of service, and the potential restrictions of the portable. I use an XPR-6500 all the time for my on-site Hotel demos.

The two issues are batteries, running a radio in the charger is not a good idea, and as the battery goes down so goes the connectivity. The second issue, and not as large is that the 2.5 support for inbound 280 char transactions is only avilable on the Gen 2 radios. But this only applies if you need inbound transaction GT 140 characters.

But if you are buying, you might as well get a XPR-4300 / 5300 verses a portable.

PS: You might try a battery eliminator, but I am not aware of one for the XPR series, although there must be one around.

Actually, I am in Asia so I am looking into using XiR P8620 and I'm not sure what its equivalent with North America. I think the only solution with the battery and charger problem is to create a direct connection of the radio to DC supply.

It looks to me like an XPR-7500 in North America.

So yes if can be a gateway, but I have no idea what you mean by "Create a direct connection of the radio to DC supply" In fact I believe because of the nature of these radios, you could damage the unit.

They use the IMPRES technology.

There is no reason you can not run a portable from a stable, regulated power supply. There are these things called clip-leads that allow you to pull a stunt like that. When technicians align a radio, it should be done on an external supply for accuracy and repeat-ability. As long as you use a proper voltage-regulated (7.5) supply, not a 12V mobile supply you should be fine.

IMPRES are just batteries; they have normal positive and negative terminals just like dumb batteries, the only difference is an additional contact for "smart" data that tells the radio about the batteries' status, but that is not required; the radios will work with a non-IMPRES battery too.

FWIW: I use an Australian DP3600 in a charging cradle for testing the TransTRBO dispatcher App (sometimes connected to a laptop, sometimes to a PC).

cheers
