You could use an RTL SDR they work great but you would have to have a laptop handy. You also could use an ACDR25 device. They can be purchased in this thread. They work really well. And you won't have to run it off a laptop after you program it. Or you could even use a Sh!tbox cheap DMR radio. Like the a TYTERA and put it in digital CSQ mode. Then output the audio from it.

Either of those devices can do what you want. Your company is lying. Unless they are using encryption, then your kind of SOL.

Just my luck, the repeater transmit frequency that we use is about 10 MHz about the top end of the device limit (480 MHz). We are near 492 MHz from memory.

Either option would be ideal and fit the bill perfectly but not to be I guess.

The service provider is inclined to be a bit economical with the truth at times, I agree. From what I have seen the techs are pretty honest but the salesman are inclined to stretch the truth at times.
