Odd APX 7000 1.5 issue

A buddy bought a 7000 off ebay awhile back. Seller says radio works. He gets the radio and it will power on but when tried to read the radio with CPS it shows up in device manager as an XTS and the read fails. He's get other 7000s and does not have any issues with them. (Side note he got his money back but the seller disappeared so hes still has the radio)

Any ideas on what he can try?

Not a lot of info about the radio. I don't think it has tags. It has some stuff programmed into it. When he puts it on his service monitor the stuff in it is programmed as 800 stuff.

I'm no expert on the subject, but I understand that early APX ALT radios were deployed with some dev version of Astro 25 firmware. Do I have this right?

Your buddy seems to have ALT APX junk and is lucky to be out zero dollars.

That would make sense. I had not heard that before. curious to see if anyone can confirm that.

Yep, that is correct. The internal controller has a very hacked together version of ASTRO25 firmware that can only be programmed by a very special version of ASTRO25 CPS.

I would also bet it is in a pre-production smooth plastic housing, predating any modern APX housing. Unless the seller changed that to try to pass it off as a legit radio...
