Has anyone heard of this device that is supposedly being released in a couple of weeks, or is it an elaborate joke?

http://www.androiddmr.com/

The website describes it as:

"The first and only Amateur Radio HT for FM/DMR that is “Point and Click” for choosing FM and DMR repeaters!
IP67 Waterproof, Dustproof, Shockproof
432MHZ, FM/DMR, GSM 4GLTE"

Thoughts or first impressions?

If it does exist, I'm sure it will be every bit as good as the sh1t radios that come from TYT and other Chinese manufacturers of their ilk.

The site is registered to the owner of the RFinder repeater directory app.

Their mockup photos appear to show a hole on the back side with a camera recessed into it. YaWannaBet this is a phone case (you supply the phone) with a "DV4mini"-like hotspot built in, or maybe a cheesy RF board slipped inside so that the antenna on top has some value?

I saw this in an email from them. SUPPOSEDLY you run their web search, find a repeater, touch the listing and it will set up your radio. Interesting as how on our systems for DMR we point you to our group web page for the listings, they are not on rfinder. Will be interesting to see how it works.

The radio/phone has been out for a while, it is the Runbo H1, goes for around $600, and is available on sites like alibaba, RFinder has created an android app that interfaces with the built in radio to add features, it will be interesting to see 1. how much more they charge for the radio and app, and 2. if the app is available on it's own. There are a few groups who have been working on a "radio" built on the Runbo H1 with added features through apps.

The concept is pretty neat... How reliable it will be will have to be determined. It would allow some of the community that does not have the skills to program some of the new DMR equipment a chance to experience it, but I imagine that the price point on something like this will be higher than logical. Seems like when itesm in this field aren't an outrageous price that the quality suffers dramatically at times.

Not a chance in hell would I buy that. Not a chance in hell will I ever subscribe to rfinder.

Full disclosure: I admin for repeaterbook.com.

I know 100%, and have screen shot evidence, that rfinder has mined repeaterbook.com for repeater data. Data that they charge money to access, some of that money they give to RAC and ARRL and other national amateur radio organizations, if their members buy the app/subscribe

Some of the repeaterbook enteries have, 100% unique phrases/word combinations in the enteries, that show up in rfinder listings.

That doesn't surprise me one bit...

HA! I think at one point early in their life, I had their app on my phone; it was OK but I noticed lots of "dead" repeaters in areas....

They scrape various web sites to get their data, including ones that are very old or have data collected from questionable sources. It doesn't help the ARRL has decided to slap their logo on rfinder's latest offerings, despite having no input to them (ARRL is NOT supplying rfinder with repeater data e.g. from their published repeater directories).

ARRL and RAC get a cut of sales from purchases by their members.

They get a kick back from a company that steals other peoples data... let that sink in.

Sadly 50% of the QST magazine is advertising.

RFinder Android DMR "Radio"

The radio is an interesting idea, and their work is interesting as well, but I disapprove of how they have developed their database, and our local repeater group has personal reasons for not supporting their activities.

My quote of the day - "If you can't say something nice about something, call it interesting". :D
