XPR 6550 Program cable

Hello, I have purchased generic (Chinese) program cables for Sabers and Astro Sabers in the past for under $10, they seem to work fine. I am not seeing generic Mototrbo program cables anywhere--specifically for xpr6550. Any particular reason or is there not enough of a demand? I am trying not to lay out $75 for an authentic Motorola cable.

Thanks, Aristotle Zoulas

There is a one-wire chip in the programming cable that identifies itself to the radio, see my blog link in my signature for more info. I also a have an OEM cable for sale in the buy-sell-trade section of the forum.

I have heard of generic knock offs cables for the 6550 and like radios.... yet I've also heard that the usb drivers for those cables are not worthy. Therefore many that have gone the generic knock off way, have later chosen to go with a true OEM cable that works with the Moto drivers. It also wouldn't be worth bricking a radio just because your generic cable and drivers burp during a firmware upgrade.

Many of the older cables with the built in rib are serial port cables, & I use them on my older inexpensive radios, so if the radio bricks, no big deal, as I've gotten my money out of those radios years ago. But on newer, more expensive radios that use a USB port, I will always use a factory cable. Why take a chance? GARY
