We have a number of XPR 6550s exhibiting the same exact problem. Roughly once a day per radio, upon pressing the PTT the radio will emit an extremely loud screeching sound akin to a smoke detector going off. The radio sounds this at max volume regardless of what volume setting the radio is on. This is happening across both the UHF R1 and UHF R2 radios. Usually, the screech stops when the PTT is released, however for the first time last night the screeching continued after the PTT was release and the radio turned off. The sound did not stop until the battery was pulled from the radio.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Firmware: R01.12.15
Codeplug: 13.02.01
Bootloader: R02.04.00

Did you call Motorola TRBO tech-support to enquire about this issue?

I posted up here first to see if any one has run into the same issue. I usually get a better outcome by reading on here than contacting Motorola. I am leaning towards a firmware issue, but if indeed it is firmware related there are likely others running the same firmware that could be of assistance.

Sad but true. Most of the posters here actually use and have the equipment and can/ are speaking from experience. Sometimes I suspect Moto is reading from a trouble list and even if they know the issue they will want to walk you through a ton of checks before telling you "your right its broken". After that the usual response is "we havent heard of that" even if they have, or send it in for service.

Anyway to your issue. Take the radio apart and clean and reseat all the connections. I have seen a ton of mobile v1.0 radios with bad displays that clear up when the front is cleaned. Sadly some dont and it s time for new parts.

IMHO--I think it is un fortunate that posts like this make it on the board. Many of us are from the 2 way industry and moved to this board because of the
quality of both the information and the people who are here. They are other places where mouth breathers, di*kwads and dildos can hang out.

You call me out because I asked if the Guy had spoken to Motorola about the issue? You do realize it could be a potential firmware problem, right? People on this website do not fix the firmware, Motorola does. It is important Motorola knows about these problems so it can be addressed.

I don't think it is being sarcastic to ask someone if they have contacted the manufacturer to inquire about a problem which is potentially unresolvable here on the board.

Also, please learn how to work the quote tags properly.

Actually, there are great folks that run this website who HAVE improved Motorola's shitty firmware on the TRBO platform for free. There are boatloads more of us who have "beta-tested" new APX and XTL/XTS firmware releases for Moto only to have it fark up something stupid.

It actually makes sense to come to a user forum like this and ask. The professional users on this forum have programmed and deployed millions of radios and have run up against most everything stupid that CPS and firmware coders have released, then have had to spend time figuring how to make it right. Trust me, Motorola has heard about those issues.

So.... can you let it go now?

Since this is a Version 1 radio, with the newest firmware, and a similar complaint exists in another product line, I would want the OP to call tech support and open a case. The relevant things I would want to review there are ALL the customer available audio settings, how the audio accessories are used (if any), and any other pertinent information. THEN the OP should post there, and if anyone else can duplicate the issue, the OP should have them report it under the same case number to Motorola. That is the ONLY way it will get solved.

OP, your first post should have been made after your due diligence was followed by contacting tech support and opening a case.

Let's get back to the TOPIC and not the personalities of any of the posters here. This is not Radio Reference.

I'll be calling tech support first thing Monday morning and reporting back here with the results and a case number.

Case Number: 24540052

Tech support recommended to recover device and manually rebuild codeplug to eliminate any issues. I am going to do that to a spare radio and see if the issue persists.

I confirmed that we are not the only users experiencing this problem, as I heard the exact same noise come from an XPR 6550 at an aquarium I visited in Chicago.

With no plans to release any new firmware, the official Motorola response to this issue is to rollback to R01.12.13 firmware.

Just a note for anyone who is trying to roll back their firmware: Do not put the radio into flashzap mode beforehand. Doing so will cause the tuning partition to be re-created, and your factory tuning values will be wiped out.
