XPR6550 Audio Oddity

I've got an XPR6550 that has me scratching my head a little bit regarding it's mic volume. If I set the radio to digital AGC (yes, I know.. it sucks) the received audio on other radios is so faint you can hardly hear it. If I attach an RSM the audio booms through, loud and clear. If I turn AGC off I have to adjust the mic gain to +20 just to make it 'ok'. With this setting both the on board mic and RSM come thru at basically the same level. So... I was sort of thinking that maybe it was a problem with the mic itself, but I've tried rehousing the radio with the same results. I've dealt with lots of 6350/6550's and I've never had one with soft audio like this... Anyone have any suggestions? Radio is running the latest firmware (1.12.13).

Thanks!

This might work, but I am short on patience lately....Nuclear_explosion.jpg

Out of all of the XPR portables I've touched, only 2 XPR6000 and 1 XPR7000 had a mic sensitivity issue out of the box. All instances were covered by warranty so I don't know where the problem resided. Its interesting that rehousing the unit didn't fix it. Has to be something other than the internal mic itself.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. The firmware was at 1.12.11 so I bumped it to .13... no difference. Oh well, one of those oddities I guess!

Just a quick follow-up to this.. I ran Mars TRBO AGC audio fix on this radio and the audio is now considerably louder. I don't know why I couldn't get the level to come up using CPS settings but it's 1000% better now.

This is good news.

I will be working to optimize the audio enhancements for the first-generation series radios.

To this point, I did not have any first-generation radios to do further testing with. One of the members of this forum, who is heavily involved on the business side of things, is sending me two radios to conduct testing with.

I will see if I can tweak the amplitude and enhance the timing of AGC response.

Motorola is still working on improving the audio. I know this because I am in direct contact with the team who is working on the issue. However, their efforts are focused on current products.
