I am back working for a client that uses a networked Capacity Plus system. All subscribers are either XPR6550 or XPR4550. My company has four XPR6550 radios assigned to us.

3 of the 4 radios have very sloppy volume controls. The volume pot does not even click when turning them on or off. It seems Motorola really shit the bed on their parts supply for these radios.

Of all the portable radios I have used and/or owned I have never had a volume pot off indent do this.(LMR or hamster crap radios)

Anyone else with XPR6550 fleets finding this occouring?

Not sure if it matter or not, all the portables are IS.

Yes, actually. My security department purchased a bunch of used 6550s and none of them "click" when turned on or off. The EMS department has some old 6550s but they all work well. I refuse to think paramedics take better care of their gear than cops. So, I think it is a bad batch or just a different model of switches.

This has been brought up a few times over the years and I believe it was essentially a bad batch. I've seen several come thru me with the same issue (had a 6350 with that just this morning).

What crappy radios. Wish they had deployed XPR7550 instead. Or better yet a tier 3 system by anyone else...

If you have not replaced the firmware with 1.12.17 do so, the radios sound and work much better ---

The radios sounds pretty decent, and coverage is excellent(should bs for where the site is) Frankly, its not my radio, not my network and not my problem. If it were mine it would not be using XPR6550 Portables.

Interesting enough the XPR6000 series I think have the best analog audio. The receivers have a very "hot" RX. And the TX audio is very clear and not tinny as some portables are. Honestly I think it sounds better than a XTS5000.

The one radio I just looked at is 1.12.13 and another one is 1.12.02. Like I said, not my radios, not my network, not my problem. Just some observations about the shit quality parts used on these radios.

I picked up a used 6500 and 6550 and the 6500 has the same volume pot issue.

What are the date codes on the units that do/don't have these issues?

It seems the early units (pre date code 1101) have actually held up the best.

The FSB10934C/MTN-0002-16-NA for the Channel Knobs covers ****MA through ****QT, date codes 1101-4401.

All of the failed floppy volume knobs (where you turn it and it bounces/stretches back ) we have seen are also in this date range.

Have not seen any of the on/off click issue you described however, mostly just prematurely bad volume pots.

I have two batches of 6550's. The ones we bought new in 2012 work great. The ones recently bought used (serial number dates them to 2010) are my problem children.
