If posting about a radio issue: Include the HOST, DSP and UCM/secure firmware versions, flashcode and CPS version you're using along with the operating system info. This is critical information.
I have a mid power XTL 5000 with legit tags and everything that powers down upon transmitting on a 158.xxxx channel. It does not power down on any other simplex or repeater channels. Thoughts?
What is your power supply? Do you know it to be capable of supplying the current your radio needs? (This also applies to a 12VDC battery). Monitor your voltages to determine if there's a drop on TX.
Also reprogram radio for LOW POWER and see if it does the same thing.
I will try that shortly. I know it's a used Astron power supply and I believe it's a 7amps output. I know it worked with a 25w VHF that I just replaced with this XTL. I'll look and get back. If it is the power supply, I'm okay with not being able to transmit on two channels.
The power supply is likely your problem. I'm betting this XTL is drawing 9-11A on TX, if it's a 50W radio. If it's a 110W, it's more like 20+ amps.
Use low power, and you'll be fine. I also recommend using low power on your other channels, in which you are not having problems. The power supply is going to get pissy with you if you keep TX'ing high power
It is a 50w radio, power supply it is hooked to is an Astron SL-11MG. I'll have to upgrade the power supply at some point...but this is a glorified scanner at this point. Rarely do I have to transmit from my office.
Thanks everyone, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something hardware related in the radio going out.
I'll adjust the TX down until I can find a suitable power supply. I'm not really in a rush and this thing is more of a scanner / spare VHF radio for me. Couldn't pass up the good deal on it. Thanks again everyone.
Turned lower power on and was able to transmit flawlessly on the 158s. I'll leave it on Low power for now, I really don't need the full 50 watts. Thanks again everyone.
little late to the show but if it helps you or anyone else.... we had a bad run of UCMs in our mobiles, if you tx'd encrypted sometimes the radio would power cycle. worked fine in the clear. we operated in VHF... i never did bother to take the ucm out and try it in a portable, or another band for that matter. mother moto in schamberg (sp?) actually took care of us and replaced them!
