XTL 5000 Random Reboot

I have a XTL 5k (7/800) currently in remote mount configuration with a O5 head. The radio has started to randomly reboot itself and today it threw an 09/10 error (radio does have a UCM in it). A couple of weeks ago it was in a dash mount configuration and this never happened. The only factors that have changed are coax, the wires for power, and coax. The antenna is the same (Maxrad 764-870 knob style antenna mounted on the roof with an NMO mount). The antenna was used before the conversion with a lip mount L bracket with different coax (RG-58 before and now on LMR-195). The rebooting didn't occur at first. Started happening a few days after the move. It replaced a UHF XTL and it never suffered from this issue.

Radio has latest firmware installed.

Issue happens on low and high power while transmitting. Has not happened when radio is affiliating with the system.

Any ideas? It's annoying not knowing where my radio left off on me in the middle of a conversation. :bang:

I'm confused.

You said it is now a dash mount and a few weeks ago it was a dash mount?? Or did you mean you converted it?

First rule of XTL installs. BOTH red wires go to the exact same point. BOTH black wires go to the exact same spot. Yellow ignition goes to a true source that goes ALL the way OFF and ALL the way on. For dash mount, ground and plus are just as important. Ground cannot be iffy.

The second possiblibilty is the infamous UCM issue with the bad/missing filter caps on the board. This should have popped up with your config sooner, unless the added RF from changing the location of the radio is the culprit.

Have you check the forward and reverse power with a Thruline? And you're certain about the UCM as what you describe is a known fault with remote mount high power V/UHF units. Lastly, have you checked the install manual for the correct drawer and head wiring?

Com501- Its a remote mount now. It was in a dash mount config in my truck before I got a chance to pull the UHF rig and put the 800 in. Both red wires are going to the distro block coming from the battery and the yellow is going to a ignition sense lead. The main ground is good, has 3 other radios hooked up to it and none of them have any issues. I am going to dig around after work today and check the wiring to make sure I didn't knock something loose when swapping out the bricks. Everything appears to be on the UCM and the carrier. If anything the radio got further away from the antenna.

Astro- I have not checked he power yet. I don't have a meter for 7/800 yet. A buddy has a telewave that I am going to borrow. I might drag the service monitor out to the truck and check the radio to make sure it's in spec. Positive there is a UCM, otherwise i somehow installed AES in software ;). I know everything is wired up right, it was being used with my UHF XTL before pulling it and putting in the 7/800 unit. (Pulled the M5 head and put in my O5 and pulled the TIB from the UHF and put it on the 7/800 and used the wiring I already had in place)

So here is a strange one for you.

I opened up the radio with the issue, sure enough there is not a filter cap. So I assume that is the issue now. So I pull apart another radio I have with a UCM, it has the filter cap. I swap out the UCMs, fire up the radio that is having the problems, and now every time I key up encrypted it reboots. Swap the UCMs back around and now I can talk without it resetting constantly.

I'm thinking I just need to add the filter cap to the existing UCM or pull the one out of my XTS 5000 and try it and see what happens.

Any further ideas guys?

Thanks again!

Is the firmware in the swapped UCM with filter cap up to date? Older UCM firmware with newer radio firmware can cause the radio to reboot.
