Anyone had any experience reading or writing to an XTL mobile with Windows 10? I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and now I am unable to read in an XTL with the USB cable. When I first connected the cable, it installed the driver, but the software never sees the radio connected. Same computer and cable I have read 100's of units with. I connected another laptop with Win 7 on it to the same radio/cable and read it with no problems. Just curious if anyone else had any problems.

Bricked an XTL2500 and XTS2500 thanks to 10 (somehow got them back with the 8.1 laptop). 10 is off the list for anything for me. Be warned :).

The driver installs but win 10 refuses to load it. have you tried setting the compatibility to win7? FYI TRBO does work on win10. I plan to install some of the older waris software soon and see how it acts in win 10. Unfortunately win10 does not have compatibility for XP so this should be interesting.

Would it not make more sense to just completely avoid Windows 10? What benefit does it offer over Windows 7? All I keep reading about are various security and privacy issues, etc.

Not the worst mistake I've ever made with operating systems, but I wish I'd stayed with Win 7 Pro. The learning curve is cumbersome with regard to what works and what "sort of works". And, yeah; the privacy issues... Nice design and layout, but a pain in the ass when a supposedly compatible program decides that it doesn't want to play nice with the new OS.

I agree but since the member is dealing with windows 10, I have replied on that basis. One point I didnt mention is 64/32 bit compatability issues. All my CPS is running on a 32 bit system. When you cross from 64 bit to a 32 bit system/program all kinds of weird things start happening. USB style communications are often messed up as the OS is trying to read 64 bit blocks and than convert to 32 bit blocks for the CPS.

That's an interesting fact that I hadn't considered. I was running 64 bit Win 7 Pro on my desktop that actually had a real serial port. I used it to program my AS+ where the actual console is hidden behind my desk, and having a single RCH3000 on my desk top. Never tried actually using a USB to serial converter, or an actual USB Motorola cable to program anything else. Good information to know. Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. I have had no problems with 10 and TRBO or APX series. I'll play with the compatibility tip and see what happens.

I was wondering about this when 10 rolled out. I like to keep behind on purpose with OSs incase and until they work the bugs out in several revisions. Even then I stick to the old reliable or previous that is still under extended support then I go to the next extended support in its last 3 to 4 years. I also stick to the 32 bit unless majority of what I have is specified for use with 64 bit. Never had issues with the iogear usb to serial. Waited on the 10 until others mentioned it. Usually I avoid the free things and go for the full package once it's been service packed and revised a bit.

The old adage was "Never trust anything from Microsoft that ended in a .0". Nowadays, that would be "...until SP1 comes out". :D
