XTL2500 Head on XTL5000

Hello all. This is my first post here. My name is Cody. I've been lurking for quite some time, but now I need some help.

I just got an XTL5000 brick and all the necessary parts except a control head. It is a Dash Mount unit. I only have an XTL2500 control head. Is there any way to force it into working? I currently get a CH MISMATCH error, in case that wasn't painfully obvious. haha.

Thanks all!

Welcome to the site, Cody.

You need to do some searching! This topic has been asked and answered. Use Google, the on-site search sucks. Add "site:communications.support" after your search term, and it will restrict search to this site only. What you want to do is very easy, search and read...

You can put all new xtl 5000 plastic on the xtl2500 control head or put a xtl 5000 control head on it. The control heads are identical internally, they even have the same part numbers on all of the internal parts. The reason it says mismatch ch is: the soft (rubber)buttons don't line up on the pc board like they would if it had xtl 5000 plastic. I found all this out the hard way "trial and error", and it will work. However the plastic is very expensive, and you will need new rubber buttons (all of them) 2ea., and the rubber trim plate that go's directly behind the control head plastic. That would be your less expensive alternative verses buying a new control head. And the APX 05 plastic is all interchangeable, once again the apx 05 control head is the same internal parts as 2500, 5000, in some cases you might have to upgrade the firmware, apx is free for life. XTL? just use a newer head.
I tied to give the answer, it won't let me post.

You simply cut the rubber for the control head identification and flip it around. You do not have to buy all new plastic

NO NO, you only have to purchase the new rubber buttons, the 3 buttons to the left of the display, and the 5 rubber buttons under the display, and the plastic housing Motorola Pt# pmln6183a that is the pt# for the housing/refurb kit, the rubber buttons I don't have that pt# handy. The pt# above is the complete kit# for a APX 05 control head (black) if you want the silver (xtl 5000) I don't have that pt# handy either. Once you put the new parts on your 2500 it will be a xtl 5000 or a apx 05 control head. On the apx o5 heads they will automatically update the firmware, it could take up to 15 minutes once you power your xtl 5000 head to a apx radio.
Good luck
Paul

You only have to buy new parts if you want it to look like an 05 head. I have a fully marked 2500 head that is a 5000 head. Bought nothing to do it.

Traced the pads and mounted a switch with the appropriate resistors to replace the rubber contact. Now I have a dual function head to use on the bench. Just 'flip the switch'.:D

I was going to do exactly that to mine - can you please post the resistor values and/or a schematic of your mod? Will save me a bit of brainwork, if you would be so kind!
