I have just acquired a VHF XTL2500 with the M5 control head.

The radio is running firmware R17 and I am using R18 to program the radio.

The radio powers up OK and I can TX/RX OK.

Only 1 of the 5 bottom keys appears to be programmed and that just changes the color of the LCD. None of the other keys are programmed except the channel change (mode) knob.

I am using a rear accessory serial programming cable.

I have successfully done a Read/Write but did not change any paras - I just wanted to test that the prog cable was working OK .

I saved the codeplug and planned to spend some hours "learning" the CPS before I attempted to start amending the codeplug.

My first task is to add various key functions to the control head - scan, nuisance delete, zone up/ down etc etc.

However, I cannot figure out how to add any functions!!!

On the Control Head screen in the CPS, all the bottom 5 keys are blank. The Rotary and Mode keys are displayed. Also DIM, HOME and PWR are displayed on the left hand side keys and there is a drop down menu on the right hand side for different options.

The Color toggle key is NOT shown on CPS display

BUT I cannot figure out how to change anything.

Do I need a mic socket USB prog cable in order to communicate with the head rather than the rear serial cable?

Do I need to synchronise the head with the body?

Is the codeplug corrupt?

Is the head faulty?

Hopefully its something simple.

Thanks
