Hello All,

So I have a Motorola XTL5000 that was upgraded from a XTL1500. I have tried everything, syncing the head, flashing the radio, upgrading the head, changing the head back to the xtl1500 head, everything... It seems that the brick is not powering up. When I put the xtl5000 head on the radio it goes throught he boot cycle twice, I get FL 01/90 and then loads in maintenance mode. I have sync the head but it cannot read the radio. I tried using a Serial programming cable that programs through the rear accessory connector as well as a usb one that goes through the GCAI port. Ignition sense is hooked, power supply is good, When I hook up the XTL1500 head again al I get is a speaker pop repeatedly. Anyone have any ideas or am I looking at a pretty paper weight?

Have you tried putting the 1500 head back on and see if maybe the upgrade didn't take?

Also, make sure you have a jumper from 14>15 on the rear connector:

I have seen someone suggest putting it into FlashZap mode and the try reading it from the rear connector. You can try that out and see if it reads it. It might take a few tries.

It sounds like an issue that I ran into with an XTL2500 in a fire truck. The CH was bad and had to be swapped. Ordered a new CH. Tried to sync it with the radio. No go. Depending on what age of the radio, sometimes the CHB is not compatible with the CH sync. This started out as a $350.00 repair - quoted to the FD - and wound up costing me to having to buy the newer CHB and serial cable to bring it to life. I had to borrow an older style CH and CHB from one of the other trucks to get it to boot out of maintenance mode to perform a firmware upgrade on the radio itself to recognize the new CH and CHB.

And; the wonderful folks at Motorola wanted to charge me for the firmware bump after they'd sold me $800.00 in hardware that the first through forth person in tech support told me wouldn't be necessary. After 10 days of bitching at them, they relented and "gave" be a free firmware bump. How nice, since the hardware they sold me wasn't compatible with the firmware even though I gave the model number, serial number, firmware rev, etc.

Too late to make a long story short, but you may need to check the compatibility of the CHB with your firmware. On a Frankenmobile; it could be a number of issues, but it sounds like you've already gone through all of the steps that I had to, only to find out that I was going to have to buy more hardware.

And; yes, I pretty much had to stick to my original quote and take a bath on 10 days worth of labor. Good luck. I'll be following this to see what you found as a resolution.
