XTL5000 change head from O3 to O5 - radio won't power up

Hi All,

I have recently changed the head on an XTL5000 mid power from an O3 to an remote O5 head. The radio will not power up with the O5 head plugged in, and when put the O3 head back on, the radio comes back to life.

Any ideas where this is going wrong? I am plugging in the O5 head just by itself (no mike or speaker connected). I tried unplugging the J2 from the back of the radio and plugging it into the head but this didn't seem to help either.

Cheers,
Matt

With a remote O5 configuration, you will need to make sure you have the correct brick to TIB flex (it should say mid power and what heads it supports), and the remote head has to have power and ignition sense on the red cable. I am assuming you have the remote data cable plugged in between the blue connectors on the TIB and the CHIB?

How do you have power connected the the drawer and control head? Same power source?

I was assuming that because it works with the O3 then it should be fine for an O5 too..

OK - this is something that I was missing. I guess I need another J2 connector for the head as well as the one already on the brick.

Hi Jason, as per above, I didn't have power going to the head. I guess I just apply power to the head through the J2 ignition sense connector?

It just occurred to me that all of this is probably detailed in the O3/O5 head manuals hosted on this site. I'll have a trawl through there as well. Thanks for the replies guys.

Cheers,
Matt

The O5 head requires a power cable attached to the RED connector, not the DB26 hex shaped connector. It is a separate molded power connection supplying ground, +12v and ignition sense to the head similar in shape to the blue data cable.

Once connected to a remote O5 head, there is only main power required on the brick. No accessory connections need to be made to the rear accessory connection on the brick at all.

Remember that the control head functions as a separate entity from the radio brick, and as such, requires its own power source, hence the separate power input point. Nothing is exchanged between the radio brick and the control head in the remote config except USB standard data over that blue cable, that's why you can get them ordered over a hundred feet long if you want. The head will power up all by itself once the red power cord is plugged in, and it will output its own error codes if not connected to a radio.
