Sigh....
You will NEVER, I repeat NEVER be able to update your R05 radio successfully 'in stages' using the dirty method. The codeplug architecture changes. You NEED to have a refresh key to get it past R08, and then again past R12, and then again past R15 or so. You can do it in one shot, WITH A REFRESH KEY.
Or, you can attempt your method, brick the radio, and have a refresh done at the factory for $399.
You have a multi-thousand dollar radio. Why not spend a teensy amount of money on decent maintenance and bring the radio up to standard value? Of course, you might have to BUY software, too. If you don't have the money to pay, then DON'T PLAY with expensive professional equipment. Buy a Baofeng. In any event, suck it up and quit complaining. Many of us here do this for a living, but we STILL own our own subscriptions (yes, MULTIPLE subscriptions) to software. This isn't a cheap hobby if you are doing it right. Somebody here might even cut you a break and do it for you if you ask nicely.
Motorola's marketing method for the Astro25 line is 'pay for upgrades'. That's the way it is. Most of us think its stupid, too, but their ball, their ball park, their game.
