I have a dash mount XTL5000 with a W4 head which is running firmware R05.01.00.

I am only using the radio initially for basic conventional analog. Later I will try digital.

Why do I need to update the firmware?

What aspects of the XTL5000's conventional analog performance will be improved by updating the firmware from R05.01.00?

I guess I will not be able to use a USB programming cable - but I only have a rear serial cable.

I don't think there any extra "noise reduction" options in R05 firmware - but I will not be using the radio in a noisy environment.

I don't think I will be able to adjust the SQ on an individual per channel basis - but I don't need this feature.

I don't want to add an O5 contrl head - well not yet

So is there any critical firmware update that will make my XTL5000 work better? It seems to be working very well just with R05.01.00!!
