Hi all,

I thought this post may fit within the Radio Mods section, however wasn't sure.

I've just discovered my XTL 5000 UHF 403-470? with the W3 HHCH only has 512 channels. I'd like to know if there is an easy way to extend this to 1000 channels without to much hassle.

The radio:
Brand: Motorola
Model: XTL5000 W3
Model No. M20QSS9PW1AN
System Package: SMARTZone
FLASHcode: 540008-000680-4
Firmware: Version 6 (realy old!)

I have been reading a number of thread regarding firmware updating however, I have found them all a little confusing as the process, which method to use etc and the so many parameters as to which cvn file version you need. And then there is the realignment of the radio (or maybe writing down the 'softpot' tuning values and then copy those back etc.

My understanding is that I could possibly extend to the number of channels using the 2000 modes MOD. However this will only work on radios with firmware version 12 or higher?

I currently program the radio via the rear accessory 26 pin connector (I made my own USB connector on accessory plug) using ASTRO25 Mobile CPS R20.00.00.

I'd appreciate some advice on the which way I can go to extend the channel capacity.

Regards

If you type XTL5000 modes into the search box you'll find the answer at the third result listed. You will need to arrange to have your firmware bumped up to 12 if you want this. There is no easy way around it and you will find the radio works better with the later firmware making the effort and small cost worthwhile.

Thanks Astro Spectra for your reply.

I think I have found what your referring to. Advanced search across the whole forum, sticky thread 3 which relates to 2000 mode for Astro25 radios?

Now to get the firmware in the radio updated.
1. Is there a member of the forum (close to Canberra Aust.) that has the correct gear to do it the proper way (happy to pay for it) that would be kind enough to do it for me or is there a do-it-yourself method such as what I've read when doing a google search that will work just as well?
2. Should I just bump the firmware up to v.12 or to the latest v.20 or something in between?

Thanks for the support.

1. If you have a programming cable (serial only I believe as only later FW versions support USB) and an iButton that you can purchase from Motorola, you can flash the radio yourself. I wouldn't try the "dirty" or FlashZap method from that old of a firmware. Some things do not update if you use that method that should like when you use the iButton method. You need the CPS software as well, but it is assumed that you have it.

2. I see no reason why you can't flash to the latest v20 firmware. Using a iButton lets you go from any FW version to another with no steps.

Plus, FlashZapping the thing will not update the codeplug structure which is required to be at or beyond R12 for the 2,000 mode modification to work.

The only workable method is a legit firmware bump with an iButton.

Thanks guys for the information. I want to have the firmware updated the correct way. I did run the Flashport program from within CPS R20 to see if the program would communicate with the radio (it seemed to) I loaded the R20 firmware file and proceeded. The software came back and said that there is either a UCM? or encryption module installed in the radio.

From my understanding, both the firmware and UCM module need to be updated at the same time.

A big thank you to JMR061. My XTL5000 UHF is now updated to the latest firmware R20.00.10 and now have 1000 modes.

Great job, great forum with helpful members. So refreshing. :)

Cheers
