I said I wouldn't do it, but now... what the hell. I'd like to make sure I have the basic procedure correct in my head. I'd also love to know about any less-than-obvious pitfalls I may be missing.

To keep it short:

XTL 5000 \ M20URS9PW1AN \ 589008-001484-7 \ R20.50.05

1) Read radio

2) change control head to 05 in CPS

3) Write radio

3) Power off, disconnect, practice safe ESD, change control head, reconnect power up...done.

Is that it? CPS help discusses a FLASHport upgrade, but I believe this is from back in the R05/06 days when it was necessary to bring the radio up to a firmware which supports O5.

Do I have this right?

That's exactly what I did recently with the same configuration. Firmware was same revision as well. No problems

Cool, thanks.... I appreciate the feedback.

I originally thought I'd just hate the W4 on my desk. But there is something about the utilitarianism of it that is oddly appealing though. So this is mostly about cosmetics.

Obviously, I've never done a head-swap on a mobile before.

So, all of that went well, except...

I did not realize (failed to learn) that the flex for the W4 head currently on the XTL does not match the O5 head I am holding in my hand. The O5 head has an 80 pin connector, while the W4 is sporting the 50 pin flavor.

Is this simply a matter of changing the flex ribbon connector?

Or is this a matter of there being 2 varieties of O5, one for dash mount, and one for remote mount (CHIB) configurations?

My zero experience with mobiles wants to believe its the first... but I think it's the latter.

Edit: Pretty sure I've answered my own question. There was a production change related to O5 heads and XTL5000s shipped after July 2006. My radio shows a manufacture date of Feb 2005 according to akardam. So I'm holding in one hand a pre-evolution radio and a post-evolution O5 head in the other. Not going to happen. Do I have this right?

Control Head to Brick - O5/M5 to Mid-Pwr = HKN6192
Control Head to CHIB - O5/M5 to CHIB (GCAI Remote) = HKN6191
TIB to Brick - GCAI Remote to Hi-Pwr = 3064658H03

The W series Brick to Control Head flex is different, when I get home I have a pile of them and will get the part number.

100w flex is only real difference on the O5/M5 series.

Thank you. So, the flex can be changed? As I'm reading in an old bat board thread....

- pre-2006 radios will work fine in dash configuration with the O5 head... however, they will not function correctly in remote config without new hardware. this is the configuration that i have been selling.

So, you're saying the flex can indeed be changed?

100w flex is only real difference on the O5/M5 series.

This is a 7/800 radio, so, what... 35w max as I recall?

This has been a learning experience....

Seems it would work, but I never guessed the head bridge and flex and screws (?!!?) would be different. I've ordered those, and I will go at this again in a few days. Once I looked at the exploded parts views on the old and new BSMs side by side, it all made sense. Ain't learning fun!?

com501, the flex I needed is the one you mentioned... HKN6192_ -- Thanks!

Since I have all these parts and notes, I should write a sticky, but I thought that someone else did at one time. There was a revision change on the flexes that affected something as I recall. There is a FSB on that. I seem to be changing a lot of customer XTL5000 HiPwrs from W9 to O5 now as the W heads have been unobtanium. We have one customer with dozens of dual head W9 packages that we will be upgrading as needed.

Yeah, I think I've got it dialed in now. Every article and post I read seemed to be interested turning a W4/W9 XTL dash mount into a O5 remote mount, which seems to be more problematic in terms of compatibility. My understanding was HLN1453 CHIB went NLA resulting in the incompatibility. May as well throw a changed flex connector in there too, just for GP.

Motorola refers to it, naturally, as "product evolution" according to eCAT... :wank:

The "sticky" is sort of here already... it's in the BSMs. One just has to look at them carefully to grok the details. As I said above, looking at the BSM for the radio/CH I was moving FROM alongside the BSM for the radio/CH I was moving TO really helped. Anyway... I digress.
