I have a VHF mid power XTL5000 with an 03 control head. The brick is directly wired to my battery, and the ignition sense wire is connected to a circuit that goes on and off with the ignition.

The radio will not power itself on automatically no matter which CPS selection I make: "Required", "Soft Powered Off", or "Ignition Only". I have to press either the power button, or the PTT button to turn on the radio. However, the radio does turn itself off when the ignition is turned off.

CPS R20.01.00
XTL5000 Model #: M20KSS9PW1AN
FLASHcode: 50D288-801C84-1
Firmware: R20.50.05
Nautilus: R06.00.00
DSP: R19.50.00

From the CPS:

"Required"
For an O3 Control Head: "Ignition" presence is required for radio power-on or power-off; a PTT button-press or a power-button press powers-on the radio, the power-button press powers-off the radio.

"Soft Powered Off"
For an O3 Control Head: "Ignition" presence is not required for radio power-on or power-off; a PTT button-press or a power-button press powers-on the radio, the power-button press powers-off the radio.

"Ignition Only"
For an O3 Control Head: No button press of any type powers-on or powers-off the radio; the radio follows the "Ignition" state.

I am assuming you have the correct TIB and cable for the O3 head and its not plugged directly into the front of the TIB? The TIB is different for an O3 than it is for any other XTL/Head config.

You are correct, only the flex changes between mid and high power.

For a mid-power XTL5000, ignition sense should be input on the rear accessory connector at pin 25 of J2.

The installation manual requires the voltage at this point go to vehicle low, or 0 volts when ignition sense is off. Similarly, when ignition is 'on' the voltage must be within about half a volt of battery plus. No 'soft' voltages will work very well at all for this.

To set the ignition sense for the first time (recommended), power on the main power lead to the hot all the time battery source. Turn on the ignition circuit. Power on the radio using it's power button (if it isn't already on). Turn OFF the radio using the power button then back on again. After the radio returns to life the second time, now turn the radio off with the ignition switch.

It should how be synchronized. This came from an engineer at Motorola, don't as me why, but some times it works.

If this still does not work. If you have a remote head (O5) and cable, now is the time to reprogram the radio, swap heads and see if the rear accessory ignition input circuit is working. The lead from the control head going through the CANBUS remote cable should tell you the internal sense system is functioning. There is a nice troubleshooting section in the DSM.

Never heard of a different TIB for the 03 head before.

I thought the TIB was the radio end (transceiver interface board) and CHIB was the head end (control head interface board)? At least I'm sure that's how I hear it from Moto.

You are correct. Their are two different TIBs for XTLs, as there are two different control head groups available, the W Series and the O Series. There are also two different CHIBs for O series heads, which crops up a lot when you buy used head off of eBay. The older version just won't play with anything newer. I seem to have gotten a rash of mismatched accessories lately and have been playing Marco Polo matching them up and upgrading FW versions where possible to sort out all the variations.

So how do we tell which of each you have r1 or r2 etc? Just plug and pray or what?

There was a production change in July 2006 which created compatibility issues with remote mount O5 heads on XTLs. There's a thread describing the particulars over on the batboard, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

So will a 03 work on a 05 TIB? Or is there a special TIB for the power the head requires independently powered heads? I've seen stacks of what look like 05 tibbed units on fleabay and often wondered how I'd go doing a head change without a hardware change.

Yes. No change at all in the TIB. An O-series TIB is an O-series TIB. This also goes for the APX line.

I've done O3 installs for both XTL and APX radios, and in both instances I went to the DB25 on the TIB for ignition sense and speaker audio using the factory PMLN4959 cable. It should *not* matter since the O3 was designed to be plugged directly into the radio deck and used in a psuedo-dashmount configuration.

I suppose I should trade in by W3 head and cable set.....
