Hello

First off I would like to say how much of a great site this really is and I'd hope to learn learn about my radio, but here is my question.... I've recently purchased a XTS 5000 800mHz that is in great condition and it'll be used for Firefighting/EMS and I have threw the right people(Cheif, County Emergency Management, Sheriff's Office, and system administrator) to get permission to put it on the state system. It powers up normally and self test is good; the battery was made August/2014 and keeps a good long charge. The only problem is that when I bought the radio from the seller he said that after you turn it on and try to put it in service mode didn't work and that after you push the button 5x it would "chirp" and restart itself. Has anyone ever heard of this before? Could it could be a software issue and be corrected on the computer with a new update or is it something more serous? I'm going to call the local Moto tech in the morning and see what his .2 cents are as well.

Thank you,
Mike

Assuming there's nothing wrong with the power source (which sounds just fine), I suspect a bad vocon in this radio. I have seen this exact same fault before in a 5K and the vocon was non-repairable.

Hopefully you didn't pay too much for this radio.

P.S. Welcome to the site!

That's what the local Motorola tech was leaning towards when I called him today but I'm going to take it to them either Friday morning or Monday and put it on the CPS to see what's on it HOST/DSP and flashcode wise btw how much would a vocon would put me "under" per se? And I only paid a whopping $350.00 with free shipping

Welcome to the Site as well!

I also just wanted to add, that if the radio is going to be used for any mission critical application (It sounds like it is), especially interior firefighting, where you life depends on it, that in addition to getting permission, you should have the county/city tech check/align it. Most eBay radios are so far out of alignment it's not funny.

I do plan on it being aligned for sure, not cutting any corners on this. I do know that the radio was built in 2003 and the warranty went out in 2004 so it might be well overdue for one. I'll see if the sheriff's department can hook me up with their tuner.

If the vocon is bad, flat rate it to the factory. That way it will come back with fresh anything it needs. Make sure you have someone local check it out so that if it goes in, you can list all the problems and get them all addressed for the same fee.

***UPDATE***

Went to the local moto shop and of course all the service technicians were out on calls and wouldnt be back until the afternoon but I did speak to the parts guy and he said it would be around $400.00 for the vocon; I happily declined but I did order a MotoTRBO antenna (PN# PMAF4003A) because people are claiming a little bit better signal pull? and where I'm at we have dead zones from 200 yards up to a mile and a half down the road so we're going to put it to the test. I then took the radio to the Sheriff's Office and went to see the system admin and the radio took to the CPS long story short, she works flawlessly and RX/TX with no problems at all. He even updated the radio as well and the flashcode. Thanks everyone for your input and time to talk.
