I purchased an IDEN NKN6544B programming cable that should fit in the XTS4K, it should be here by the the end of the week. I am aware that the unmodified cable will make my radio transmit and that I should pick a receive only channel while using CPS. To my understanding I need to unsolder everything but these connections correct? and after that play the waiting game while it reads and writes. Eventually I would like to save up and get the real deal cable, Im sure that it will read and write a whole lot faster, along with the reliability. any input on improving a programming cable is welcomed in short of buying the real cable, thanks again for the input

update, the cable I purchased worked reading and writing the radio without modifying the cable whatsoever! reading and writing takes less than 30 seconds each. So for everyone out there with a XTS4K, buy the cable I listed above instead of spending 300 bucks on a cable that your only going to use 5 times a year. I have read and write the radio multiple times with no issues

That's right. But radio will be forced to transmit mode after each write. How you bypass this? By changing personality to Receive Only?

NKN6544B physically can't be plugged to XTS4000, because have small plastic latches that prevents it to be plugged. I tries just not may times and saw how these latches been a little bit deformed.

I don't know what I did right, but all I did was shave off the sides so the connector can fit in properly and didn't have an issue with the radio transmitting. I have two ideas, either I shaved the sides off to where the pins for transmit is not touching, or I had the specific channel the radio was on with the inhibit function turned on for that specific channel, but I do not see the "TX inhibited" icon pop up on the radio. I normally always turn on the inhibit function until I am on the ham band and ready to talk to someone. So maybe in your case, I would find a channel that is normally not busy. Read and save a codeplug of the radio, then disconnect the radio. do what you need to do and add the inhibit icon to the radio, plug it back in and write it, so you limit the amount of time you are transmitting. I know I just got very very lucky and purchased a 20 dollar cable that works perfectly every single time, even the reading and writing is very fast, normally I can read the radio in under 5 seconds, and write a radio in under 20 seconds or less. I believe I have around 90 personalities saved on the radio, that's why it reads and writes so fast.

I noticed the same thing, I couldn't plug the cable into the bottom of the radio. With nothing to lose, I ended up shaving the sides of the plastic with a razor blade half a millimeter at a time until it actually fit perfect and stays on secured without a problem. After that I crossed my finders, and **** my pants when I was able to read and write my radio fir the first time ever!!!!
